Ask Sean

Reader Question:
I know that it is important to deepen the subject after the induction. What do you say to deepen your subject after doing the instant induction. Could you please send me the script?

Sean's Answer:
Well, here's what I sometimes say, "Sleep! And as I rotate your head you go deeper and deeper. In a moment I will stop rocking your head and you will go deeper and deeper. There, go deeper and deeper. In a moment I will count backwards from ten down to one. Let each number take you even deeper... Ten... Nine..." etc. That's it!

Induction of the Month

The Finger Snap

The "finger snap" induction is a shock induction, but it looks really cool and works very well. After getting permission from your subject to hypnotize her, ask her to follow your hand as you raise it up above her eyes. Snap your fingers and say, "Sleep!" As with all shock inductions, you need to deepen the subject down into a nice trance state. Here's a video example of a "finger snap" induction.
Hypnosis Demonstration - A Report

Stevenson University
I was asked to give a hypnosis demonstration for a psychology class at a local college. They wanted to learn how hypnosis can be used as an adjunct to psychotherapy. It was a really nice group, but one of the things I noticed was that all of the students were young women, except for one fellow. Did he know how lucky he was? You see, Stevenson University used to be known as Villa Julie College and was traditionally a girl's college. It was a very nice group of people and during my lecture....

Reader Question:
In the next couple of months I plan to start doing more impromptu hypnosis (Christmas and New Years parties, particularly), and maybe street hypnosis... and I just wanted to hear a few ideas for routines that would better suit an impromptu setting.

Sean's Answer:
I always do suggestibility tests such as "arms rising and falling" or the "hand clasp" test. I really like the "magnetic fingers" test which I'll explain this issue. This test can be done with an individual or a crowd. "Put your hands straight out in front of you and clasp your hands together like this.... Now lock your elbows... Now with your hands clasped, take your two index fingers and stick them out... Now look at me through those index fingers.... Now imagine the tips of those index fingers are very powerful magnets... and those powerful magnets are really attracted to one another. Feel them being drawn together closer... and closer... now imagine that I put a vice on them and start to crank it tighter... and tighter... and tighter!!!" It is extremely rare for this test to fail. Do you want to know why? Listen to the blogtalkradio interview or read your next newsletter for the secret! Even without knowing the secret, this is an excellent demonstration for a party.

Reader Question:
I have noticed that when doing rapid inductions, in particular the arm-pull, that some of the subjects -- especially males (haven't seen this with females) -- will tend to smile or even start to give a little nervous laugh as I am doing the actual arm pull and saying, "Sleep!" and may even have their eyes still open until I begin deepening. Yet, as long as I follow through with the induction, they still go under hypnosis -- for real! Every time! But what is the significance of the smile and giggle? Is this some sort of psychological resistance? Have you experienced this, and what is your take on it?
Sean's Answer
I believe your explanation is spot-on! There are differences between the sexes and IN GENERAL, women are more passive than men. Also, for many men it is uncomfortable to be that close to another man. You are to be commended for sticking with them and continuing the deepening, and as you have noted, they eventually succumb. Great job!

Video of the Month

Boom! Boom! Boom!
Here's a triple. One of these you've seen, two you haven't. Watch the reaction of the third girl. Some people enjoy hypnosis more than most!

One thing you may notice is that I have directed you to one of my favorite hypnosis sites. It's called hypnothoughts.com and is run by Scott Sandland.
Check it out!
Interview with Scott Sandland
Scott runs a very successful hypnosis portal called hypnothoughts.com I first met Scott in Los Angeles about a year ago. He took some time out from his busy practice and website duties to do this interview.

Sean: Tell us a little about your practice.
Scott: My Hypnotherapy practice is pretty well balanced between a few referral streams. I have a private practice as well as working in a doctor's office, a dentist office, and a drug rehab center. In my private practice I get referrals from a few other doctors, mental health professionals, and hypnotists. Much of my work is related to behavior modification and pain control, although I see people for a variety of issues.

Sean: Do you use instant inductions in your practice?
Scott: I almost never use a 'shock' induction or anything of that nature anymore, although in certain situations I will use them for demonstration purposes. Most of what I do will be more gentle rapid inductions. Many people think rapid inductions have to be jarring, when in fact they can be very permissive and maternal and still work quite well. I believe that for us to use hypnosis in clinical settings we need to be able to work at the pace of that office. Some of those offices give me all the time in the world, sometimes I have 20 minutes to pre-talk and prep a new client for a procedure. Having rapid inductions gives me the confidence to know that whatever happens and needs to get done, I have all the time I need.

Sean: Tell us about the Global Hypnosis Summit project.
Scott: The Global Hypnosis eSummit is a really fun project that I'm very excited to be a part of. It's the first online hypnosis conference, designed from the ground up to function like a normal hypnosis convention without anyone needing to leave their homes. We have 100 hours of lectures being shared via streaming video, online chat rooms, an interactive vendor room with dozens of different booths, and more. We have some of the biggest names in the industry teaching classes for this event, and almost every single certifying body we have spoken to has been excited to offer Continuing Education Units for people who attend this online conference.

The neat thing is that it's designed to look like an actual place, so anyone can navigate through all the features by clicking on the door they want to go into. And since 98% of computers on the internet are compatible with the software we are using, nobody needs to download or install anything. They just show up to the site and learn from some of the biggest names in the world.

Note: Sean will be presenting on "Street Hypnosis" and also on the "Dave Elman Induction".

The Hand Clasp Induction

Here's an interesting and pretty easy induction. When you suggest to your subject that his hands are locked together so tightly that they will not come apart and he locks his mind around that suggestion, his critical faculty is bypassed and he is already in hypnosis! You may then produce a shock movement that will result in instant hypnosis.

Two important cautions here. First, make sure your subject does not have any physical problems that could be made worse with this induction. Second, be ready to catch your subject because he may lurch forward or drop to the floor when the induction is triggered.
How Much Shock in an Instant Induction?

There has been some recent discussion about whether an instant induction can be very gentle and still work as well as a standard shock induction. When a hypnotist does something unexpected such as a sudden movement or sound, it causes a slight shock to the subject's nervous system. This opens a 500 milisecond window of opportunity to give the command "Sleep!" after which the subject will go into trance.

The unexpected movement could be an arm pull, a hand drop, a finger snap, a shout or almost anything. It does not have to be violent, in fact it can be gentle -- BUT the more gentle the shock, the fewer people will go into trance.

Some subjects will go into trance with a very gentle movement, but many will not. So here's the deal. Your shock must be unexpected, but doesn't have to be violent... but it DOES have to be a shock or the induction may not work. There are two important exceptions, and I will discuss these in a later issue.

One final note: Always make sure your shock will not harm your subject before you do the induction.

Reader Question:
What wording do you use when you make a subject forget a number?
Sean's Answer
You can make a subject forget any number, but personally, I like to make the person forget the number three. Here's how I say it.

"In a moment, an interesting thing will take place. The number that is normally found between two and four will be gone. Oh sure, we can get it back later on, but for now it will be interesting to send it off on vacation for a while, okay? So it's as if there was never a number between two and four, and if you were to try to imagine the numbers one to four on up to ten, the numbers 2 and 4 are so close together, that there's no room for another number. And the harder you try and find a number between two and four, the further away it goes. If you understand that, nod your head... Good. Now count from one to four, on up to ten out loud now."

Twice I asked her to count from 1-4, as in One, Two, Four. Get it?
