Ask Sean

Reader Question:
What wording do you use when you lock a subject's eyes shut?
Sean's Answer
As you know, this is a test for a fairly light state of hypnosis. Namely, this is catalepsy of a small group of muscles, or a ONE on the Arons scale. To accomplish this I say, "In a moment I'm going to count from three down to one as I tap you on the forehead. As I do, feel those eyelids locking down, sealing tightly shut. [touch] One, feel those eyelids closing down, sealing tightly shut, as if they were superglued down. Two, it's as if those eyelids were welded together, and three, it's as if those eyelids were fused together in fact, if you were to try to open them, they would seal even tighter. In fact, the harder you try to open them, the more tightly they seal shut. Try to open them they seal tighter. Try harder, they seal tighter. Try harder, they seal tighter..... Now stop trying, relax them and go much deeper." That's it!

Hypnotized by Mail?
My latest video is different from any I have posted so far. Many people have been asking me to show some more
unusual inductions.

The late Ormond McGill, Dean of American Hypnotists, wrote about an unusual induction in his book, "The Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism". He describes how a person may be hypnotized long distance, by mail!!!

I had never seen a video of this, so the logistics were a little tricky, but I think it turned out pretty well.

In this VIDEO, I actually hypnotize a young woman by mail. Imagine this. You could be thousands of miles away and yet still be able to drop someone into trance. What a concept!

I added in some spooky music to add to the suspense. Actually, it is a pretty spooky concept, don't you think?
Global Hypnosis eSummit 13-15 March 2009

Mark Your Calendar! As Scott Sandland, organizer of the Global Hypnosis eSummit, observes, "Most hypnotists have never been to a national conference. As valuable as the education is and no matter how great the speakers are, there are just too many problems with them for you to take the time, expense, and hassle to go, but no more!

"We have scoured the globe looking for top trainers in every country. There should be no boundaries and no obstacles to learning. Watch as techniques are demonstrated just like you were sitting in the audience. Learn new ideas and techniques to expand your practice. See what's being done in other parts of the world that can impact your practice wherever you live. Learn new ways of doing things. Lectures will be for sale on an individual basis after the two week period has expired."

I will be presenting two lectures - one on the Dave Elman Induction and one on Street Hypnosis.

Ask Sean

Reader Question:
What is the wording you use when you make the subject's arm so stiff that it will not bend?
Sean's Answer
First of all, the "arm stiff and rigid" challenge is best done after the "eye lock" challenge described in the last issue of this newsletter. It is important to become more insistent and authoritative as you go through the challenge. Here is what I say. "In a moment I am going to pick up this arm [touch] by the wrist. When I do, I want you to make a tight fist and stiffen up that arm. Make it stiff and rigid as an iron bar! [pick up wrist] That's right, stiff and rigid. Lock that elbow! As I count from one to three, make it stiff and rigid as an iron bar! One, lock that shoulder [touch shoulder], your arm is stiff and rigid as an iron bar! Two [touch elbow], locking at the elbow, your arm is becoming stiff and rigid and three [touch wrist], locking at the wrist. Your arm is stiff and rigid as an iron bar. So rigid, in fact that if you were to TRY to bend that arm, the harder you try to bend it, the more stiff and rigid it becomes! TRY to bend it, it becomes STIFFER. Try HARDER, it gets STIFFER. Try HARDER, it gets STIFFER!!! ... In a moment I'm going to tap your hand and when I do, the arm flops down and you go much deeper. [tap] Go much deeper."

Dear Donald

The EXTREME Street Hypnosis Newsletter is now read in 68 countries!
Video of the Month

The "Tug" induction
This induction was inspired by a video I saw from hypnotist David Fontenot. It is actually a quite gentle instant induction, but can look a little "energetic" depending on the size of the subject and how close together her feet are when the induction is triggered.

The "tug" should be quick, but not forceful. Imagine the tug as an electric shock, rather than a "pull".

One more thing to notice in the video. Subject number two reacts to the shock by quickly raising her hands. This is a normal reaction to the shock. An inexperienced hypnotist might be tempted to think the induction has gone wrong. Watch how I continue deepening and she drifts down into hypnosis.
A Video Milestone - 1.5 Million Views!
Almost two years ago I began posting my work on Youtube. One of my first videos was an "arm pull" induction with a young woman named J********. She is the daughter of a friend of my sister and a very sweet girl. Maybe it was because she is so photogenic or maybe because she dropped so quickly and so deeply into trance, but her video has been wildly popular. So far it has received over half a million views, making it one of the most popular hypnosis videos on Youtube! On Wednesday, total video views for all my videos topped 1.5 Milllion!!! Thank you very much for watching the videos and for supporting this street hypnosis newsletter.

My goal is to educate people about hypnosis and street hypnosis in particular and how to do it safely. Please drop me a line with any suggestions you might have!

If there is enough interest, I will try to get her back for a demo. No guarantees, but I will do my best.

Reader Question:
I know that it is important to deepen the subject after the induction. What do you say to deepen your subject after doing the instant induction. Could you please send me the script?

Sean's Answer:
Well, here's what I sometimes say, "Sleep! And as I rotate your head you go deeper and deeper. In a moment I will stop rocking your head and you will go deeper and deeper. There, go deeper and deeper. In a moment I will count backwards from ten down to one. Let each number take you even deeper... Ten... Nine..." etc. That's it!

Induction of the Month

The Finger Snap

The "finger snap" induction is a shock induction, but it looks really cool and works very well. After getting permission from your subject to hypnotize her, ask her to follow your hand as you raise it up above her eyes. Snap your fingers and say, "Sleep!" As with all shock inductions, you need to deepen the subject down into a nice trance state. Here's a video example of a "finger snap" induction.
Hypnosis Demonstration - A Report

Stevenson University
I was asked to give a hypnosis demonstration for a psychology class at a local college. They wanted to learn how hypnosis can be used as an adjunct to psychotherapy. It was a really nice group, but one of the things I noticed was that all of the students were young women, except for one fellow. Did he know how lucky he was? You see, Stevenson University used to be known as Villa Julie College and was traditionally a girl's college. It was a very nice group of people and during my lecture....

Reader Question:
In the next couple of months I plan to start doing more impromptu hypnosis (Christmas and New Years parties, particularly), and maybe street hypnosis... and I just wanted to hear a few ideas for routines that would better suit an impromptu setting.

Sean's Answer:
I always do suggestibility tests such as "arms rising and falling" or the "hand clasp" test. I really like the "magnetic fingers" test which I'll explain this issue. This test can be done with an individual or a crowd. "Put your hands straight out in front of you and clasp your hands together like this.... Now lock your elbows... Now with your hands clasped, take your two index fingers and stick them out... Now look at me through those index fingers.... Now imagine the tips of those index fingers are very powerful magnets... and those powerful magnets are really attracted to one another. Feel them being drawn together closer... and closer... now imagine that I put a vice on them and start to crank it tighter... and tighter... and tighter!!!" It is extremely rare for this test to fail. Do you want to know why? Listen to the blogtalkradio interview or read your next newsletter for the secret! Even without knowing the secret, this is an excellent demonstration for a party.

Reader Question:
I have noticed that when doing rapid inductions, in particular the arm-pull, that some of the subjects -- especially males (haven't seen this with females) -- will tend to smile or even start to give a little nervous laugh as I am doing the actual arm pull and saying, "Sleep!" and may even have their eyes still open until I begin deepening. Yet, as long as I follow through with the induction, they still go under hypnosis -- for real! Every time! But what is the significance of the smile and giggle? Is this some sort of psychological resistance? Have you experienced this, and what is your take on it?
Sean's Answer
I believe your explanation is spot-on! There are differences between the sexes and IN GENERAL, women are more passive than men. Also, for many men it is uncomfortable to be that close to another man. You are to be commended for sticking with them and continuing the deepening, and as you have noted, they eventually succumb. Great job!

Boom! Boom! Boom!
Here's a triple. One of these you've seen, two you haven't. Watch the reaction of the third girl. Some people enjoy hypnosis more than most!

One thing you may notice is that I have directed you to one of my favorite hypnosis sites. It's called hypnothoughts.com and is run by Scott Sandland.
Check it out!
Interview with Scott Sandland
Scott runs a very successful hypnosis portal called hypnothoughts.com I first met Scott in Los Angeles about a year ago. He took some time out from his busy practice and website duties to do this interview.

Sean: Tell us a little about your practice.
Scott: My Hypnotherapy practice is pretty well balanced between a few referral streams. I have a private practice as well as working in a doctor's office, a dentist office, and a drug rehab center. In my private practice I get referrals from a few other doctors, mental health professionals, and hypnotists. Much of my work is related to behavior modification and pain control, although I see people for a variety of issues.

Sean: Do you use instant inductions in your practice?
Scott: I almost never use a 'shock' induction or anything of that nature anymore, although in certain situations I will use them for demonstration purposes. Most of what I do will be more gentle rapid inductions. Many people think rapid inductions have to be jarring, when in fact they can be very permissive and maternal and still work quite well. I believe that for us to use hypnosis in clinical settings we need to be able to work at the pace of that office. Some of those offices give me all the time in the world, sometimes I have 20 minutes to pre-talk and prep a new client for a procedure. Having rapid inductions gives me the confidence to know that whatever happens and needs to get done, I have all the time I need.

Sean: Tell us about the Global Hypnosis Summit project.
Scott: The Global Hypnosis eSummit is a really fun project that I'm very excited to be a part of. It's the first online hypnosis conference, designed from the ground up to function like a normal hypnosis convention without anyone needing to leave their homes. We have 100 hours of lectures being shared via streaming video, online chat rooms, an interactive vendor room with dozens of different booths, and more. We have some of the biggest names in the industry teaching classes for this event, and almost every single certifying body we have spoken to has been excited to offer Continuing Education Units for people who attend this online conference.

The neat thing is that it's designed to look like an actual place, so anyone can navigate through all the features by clicking on the door they want to go into. And since 98% of computers on the internet are compatible with the software we are using, nobody needs to download or install anything. They just show up to the site and learn from some of the biggest names in the world.

Note: Sean will be presenting on "Street Hypnosis" and also on the "Dave Elman Induction".

Video of the Month

The Hand Clasp Induction

Here's an interesting and pretty easy induction. When you suggest to your subject that his hands are locked together so tightly that they will not come apart and he locks his mind around that suggestion, his critical faculty is bypassed and he is already in hypnosis! You may then produce a shock movement that will result in instant hypnosis.

Two important cautions here. First, make sure your subject does not have any physical problems that could be made worse with this induction. Second, be ready to catch your subject because he may lurch forward or drop to the floor when the induction is triggered.
How Much Shock in an Instant Induction?

There has been some recent discussion about whether an instant induction can be very gentle and still work as well as a standard shock induction. When a hypnotist does something unexpected such as a sudden movement or sound, it causes a slight shock to the subject's nervous system. This opens a 500 milisecond window of opportunity to give the command "Sleep!" after which the subject will go into trance.

The unexpected movement could be an arm pull, a hand drop, a finger snap, a shout or almost anything. It does not have to be violent, in fact it can be gentle -- BUT the more gentle the shock, the fewer people will go into trance.

Some subjects will go into trance with a very gentle movement, but many will not. So here's the deal. Your shock must be unexpected, but doesn't have to be violent... but it DOES have to be a shock or the induction may not work. There are two important exceptions, and I will discuss these in a later issue.

One final note: Always make sure your shock will not harm your subject before you do the induction.

Ask Sean

Reader Question:
What wording do you use when you make a subject forget a number?
Sean's Answer
You can make a subject forget any number, but personally, I like to make the person forget the number three. Here's how I say it.

"In a moment, an interesting thing will take place. The number that is normally found between two and four will be gone. Oh sure, we can get it back later on, but for now it will be interesting to send it off on vacation for a while, okay? So it's as if there was never a number between two and four, and if you were to try to imagine the numbers one to four on up to ten, the numbers 2 and 4 are so close together, that there's no room for another number. And the harder you try and find a number between two and four, the further away it goes. If you understand that, nod your head... Good. Now count from one to four, on up to ten out loud now."

Twice I asked her to count from 1-4, as in One, Two, Four. Get it?

While I don't completely agree that these inductions are complicated - they just take some practice - I can show you one with fewer moving parts. Be careful not to hurt your subject when you do this one. Just a little tap will do.

Three Mistakes Street Hypnotists Make
Sometimes street hypnotists will make mistakes that greatly reduce their success rate. Here are some of the most common mistakes.

1. Begging someone to participate. This is a cardinal sin. Never beg anyone to do hypnosis with you. If the person does not really want to experience hypnosis, it is much harder for you to induce him/her.

2. Asking the subject if he/she would like to try to go into hypnosis. Try implies failure! The hypnotist must project to the subject that the hypnotist will ABSOLUTELY be able to perform the trance. There is no doubt!

3. Failing to spot the scammer. Sometimes one of the crowd will attempt to make a fool of the hypnotist. This person is very insistent. Look into his eyes and ask him, "Do you really want to do this?" Usually he will indicate that he is not interested in going into hypnosis.

One MILLION Youtube Views!

On 19 October while I was teaching in Ottawa, Ontario, I received my one millionth view on youtube.com This is quite a milestone and makes my videos some of the most viewed hypnosis clips on youtube! Many thanks to all the people who have watched! I got to thinking, with an average video length of one minute, that means that people have used 23.148 man-months watching my videos. That's a lot of time wasted. :-) I sure hope they learned something!!!
What Would YOU like to See?

I got some very good suggestions from my readers as to what hypnotic phenomena they would like to see me perform. I am lining up some subjects, so we should shoot some footage this week or next. Keep an eye on youtube for my next offerings and if there is a hypnotic phenomenon YOU would like to see, drop me a line!

Ask Sean

Reader Question:
What is the difference between a shock induction and a confusion induction?

Sean's Answer:
Both types of induction bypass the "critical faculty" of the conscious mind so that hypnosis can take place. The shock induction uses a sudden movement or sound to create a moment of vulnerability, during which the command "Sleep!" is shouted.

The confusion induction can best be described as doing something that makes the subject go, "Huh?!!" after which the hypnotist immediately deepens the trance and talks the person into hypnosis.

With both types of inductions, the most important part is to start deepening the subject immediately. If you don't deepen, the subject will pop out of hypnosis.

Reader Question:
I never know what to do with my subjects after I get them into trance. Do you have any recommendations?

Sean's Answer:
The most powerful demonstration you can do is the reinduction. To some experienced hypnotists, this may seem a little silly, but this little trick is a real crowd pleaser! After you have hypnotized and deepened your subject, tell her "In a moment I'm going to have you open your eyes, but you will find that when I point to you and say "Sleep!", your eyes close down, your head drops forward and you go into a pleasant, deep hypnotic slumber, and it feels really good! If you understand this, nod your head." Then have her open her eyes (Note this does NOT emerge her from hypnosis. She is still in.) and trigger the reinduction. The crowd will go crazy! Give some limitations to the suggestion so that it only works when you do it and it only works for the next ten minutes.

One Student, One Instructor
One-on-One
The Seattle class last month had 13 students and there were 13 people in the Ottawa class. But somehow my Baltimore class wound up with ONE student. I had already cleared my calendar and so I had no other plans. I considered cancelling the class, but decided to give my one student the option of cancelling or doing a one-on-one mentorship. She opted to go ahead with the mentorship. It was a blast! I did a two-day "mind dump" and taught her everything I know about instant and rapid inductions, and a lot of other hypnosis knowledge. Then I brought in people for her to practice on, including our waitress at the diner where we had lunch! I worked her hard! Sunday afternoon I took her out so she could do instant hypnosis on strangers in downtown Annapolis! She dropped six people. What a great time!

I really enjoyed being able to mentor and coach one student at a time and so here is what I've decided to do.
