Reader Question:
I've always read that "All hypnosis is self-hypnosis." Do you agree?
Sean's Answer:
Not really. In his book Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism Ormond McGill talked about the Western view of hypnosis and how it differs from the Eastern view. In the West, we tend to value our "self determination" greatly and it is more comfortable for us to think about hypnosis as something we do ourselves. In the East, hypnosis is thought of as something that the hypnotist does to his subject. When it comes to instant inductions, my view tends to be more Eastern because I believe it is important for the subject to follow instructions instantly, without questioning. This makes for quicker, deeper inductions which is, of course, why we do instant inductions.

Chips off the Old Block

My twin sons Sean and Ian have recently certified with the National Guild of Hypnotists, the largest hypnosis organization in the world. Sean has just performed his first hypnosis show at his college in Vermont, and since Ian is attending school close to home, he still comes out with me on street hypnosis outings. I don't have any film from Sean's show, but here's a clip of Ian in action. I'm very proud of them both!

A Double Speed Induction

The Maryland Extreme Street Hypnosis Team was doing street hypnosis in Annapolis, MD last week and two of our team, Brian and Ian, decided to try something different. "Why not try a double instant induction?" They found a couple of willing subjects and here is the result of their effort. I think it turned out pretty nicely! Here's a video of the induction.

Reader Question:
I have noticed you staring into the eyes of your subject just before you trigger the induction. Are you doing something with your eyes to make them go into trance?
Sean's Answer:
Good question! I am giving the subject my best "hypnotic stare." I stare into her eyes without blinking to intimidate her. It usually doesn't take long before her eyes glaze over, or she gives me a look of resignation. That is the ideal time to trigger the induction. Those of you who have trained with me know that intimidation is not something I do naturally. This is just an act, but it works very well.

Why the "Hand Drop" Induction Should Be Done Seated
We have a really cool video example this issue. The hand drop induction should always be done seated because when the induction is triggered, there is a natural tendency for the subject to lurch forward from the waist in a jack-knife motion. This is very difficult to control from a standing position and the subject could launch herself headlong onto the floor. Bad, Bad, Bad!!! Always perform this induction with the subject seated. Here's an example of the motion I described.

Reader Question:
I was working with a subject and told her that her hand would be stuck to the arm of the chair, but she didn't stick, and picked up her hand. Any ideas?
Sean's Answer:
There could be many reasons why she didn't stick, but the two most obvious reasons are she either was not deep enough, or maybe it was your wording. Let's talk about the wording this issue. Here is what I say, "In a moment I will count from one to three. As I do, feel this hand (touch) sticking to the arm of the chair. One, feel that hand sticking to the arm of the chair as if it were super-glued down. Two, it's as if that hand was fused to the chair. And three, it's as if that hand and the arm of the chair were carved from a single block of wood... one single piece. In fact, if you were to TRY to lift that hand, it would stick even tighter. The harder you TRY to lift that hand, the more tightly it sticks. Try to lift it, it sticks tighter. Try harder, it sticks tighter. Try even harder to lift that hand, it sticks tighter!!!" Be insistent. Use a commanding tone. She won't lift her hand.

Report - National Guild of Hypnotists Convention

8-10 August - Marlborough, MA
I'm back from the convention and here is my report:
The convention this year was packed with exciting speakers and lots of information. Most of the seminars I attended were about marketing and various therapy techniques, but of course I had to attend a couple of offerings on instant and rapid inductions just to see if anyone was doing something new! I once read an account of how the Abbe Jose-Custodio de Faria (1756-1819) used to hypnotize people. In many respects, the Abbe Faria may be considered the first speed hypnotist. Here is an account from Alexander Bertrand of an instant induction performed in 1802. "He placed the person who wished to be influenced in an armchair, and urged him to close his eyes and meditate; then, suddenly, he uttered in a strong and commanding voice the word 'Sleep,' which usually made a keen enough impression on the patient to produce in him a slight jolt of the whole body, warmth, perspiration, and sometimes somnambulism." Harvey Hunt, one of the presenters, demonstrated the Abbe Faria induction during his program. It was very interesting to watch. Harvey did the induction standing, and began with a good "hypnotic stare", but I think the Abbe Faria would have been proud! Well done, Harvey!
Fun Things to do While They're in Trance

Mind Reading
I want to thank Brian Phillips for this one. Deepen your subject and ask her for some benign personal information like her birthday or the name of her first pet. Then tell her that she will forget having told you this information. Ask her to open her eyes and say something like, "Many people believe that because, as a hypnotist, I can read people so well... they believe that I can read minds. You don't believe in that sort of thing, do you?" Then go through a process whereby you "guess" her birthday. "I feel that it's in the spring, is that right?... and I think it's an even number...." When you "guess" the right date, your subject is amazed and the crowd loves it!

Reader Question:
In your recent video where you hypnotized the young woman and anesthetized her so that she wouldn't experience pain when she had her ears pierced, you did a "hand drop" induction on her. Had she been "pre-hypnotized"?

Sean's Answer:
Good question. She did drop like a rock, but no, she was not pre-hypnotized. She arrived about ten minutes into my lecture so she was not "softened up". The demonstration went very well and she felt no discomfort during the procedure.

An Interesting Handshake Induction

Tricky
Michael Bennett of Bennett/Stellar University posted an instant handshake induction which you may find very interesting. The "victim" is Keith Livingston, whom I interviewed back in the spring. Have a look at Michael's technique and see if you can figure out all the nuances. This is a very cool induction. BTW, Keith Livingston and I will be teaching an instant induction course in Seattle, Washington 13-14 September. Come join us and learn how to do these inductions yourself!
Street Hypnosis - Practical Applications

What Good is This?
Street hypnosis is fun, sure, but why should a serious clinical hypnotist be interested in it? Although inductions such as the hand drop and the arm pull seem rather flashy, there are serious, clinical situations that call for the use of these inductions. Sometimes a client will be a little nervous and have trouble concentrating. Other clients may be very analytical. Both types of clients can have trouble going into hypnosis. The bottom line for a hypnotist or hypnotherapist is that if you can't put the person into trance, you can't help him or her. A hypnotist who is comfortable doing these rapid inductions should be able to hypnotize almost anyone who comes into the office. As hypnotists, we get better at our craft the more we practice it, and street hypnosis allows a hypnotist to get a LOT of practice. You will learn things out on the street that you just won't learn in a clinical setting. On the street there are distractions galore and you get to work with a wide variety of people. Personally, I refined my testing procedures on the street. Years ago, I used to have clients occasionally fail my depth testing. Using what I learned doing street hypnosis, I cannot remember the last time a client failed a test for depth. I am constantly refining my techniques, using what I learn on the street. Go on out and give it a go!

National Guild of Hypnotists Convention

8-10 August - Marlborough, MA
I'm off to Massachusetts for the annual NGH convention. I attend this convention and educational conference every year and I always learn a lot! They offer over 200 different seminars on every hypnosis topic imaginable and as the leadership says, "It's Intense!" If you see me in the hall between seminars, please stop me and say "Hello." I plan on spending the evenings in the bar at the Embassy Suites, having fun with instant inductions. You are welcome to join me. In past years the hotel management has been happy to let us play in the lounge and we have hypnotized several bartenders and waiters... as well as other customers.

Lecture at Stevenson University

I was asked to give a hypnosis demonstration for a psychology class at a local college. They wanted to learn how hypnosis can be used as an adjuct to psychotherapy. It was a really nice group, but one of the things I noticed was that all of the students were young women, except for one fellow. Did he know how lucky he was? You see, Stevenson University used to be known as Villa Julie College and was traditionally a girls college. It was a very nice group of people and during my demonstration I told the students about the three common misconceptions about hypnosis, namely:
-Loss of control
-Telling secrets
-Getting stuck in hypnosis
After that I invited the lone fellow in the class to come up for a demonstration of hypnotic anesthesia. I had him close his eyes and pretend that they wouldn't work. I then tried to make him feel pain, but of course, he felt nothing.

Then I did a few suggestibility tests for fun and chose one girl for a demo of the Dave Elman induction. She was an excellent subject and went VERY deep. I conditioned her for reinduction and triggered the reinduction several times during the lecture. In addition to being a great subject, she was a good sport so we had a lot of fun. I hope they'll invite me back soon. They gave me some very nice Stevenson University gear (I felt like 5-year-old leaving a birthday party with his goodie bag) :-)

New Hypnosis Mentorship Program

The Seattle class last month had 13 students and there are 12 people signed up for the Ottawa class on 18-19 October. But somehow my Baltimore class wound up with ONE student. I had already cleared my calendar and so I had no other plans. I considered cancelling the class, but decided to give my one student the option of cancelling or doing a one-on-one mentorship. She opted to go ahead with the mentorship. It was a blast! I did a two-day "mind dump" and taught her everything I know about instant and rapid inductions, and a lot of other hypnosis knowledge. Then I brought in people for her to practice on, including our waitress at the diner where we had lunch! I worked her hard! Sunday I took her out with some of my hypnotist friends so she could do instant hypnosis on strangers in downtown Annapolis! She dropped six people. What a great time!

I really enjoyed being able to mentor and coach one student at a time and so here is what I've decided to do. I am offering a weekend mentorship program. You get to spend two full days with me learning as much as your brain can absorb about instant and rapid inductions, hypnosis in general, whatever you want. This is your class. YOU pick the dates and YOU decide what will be taught. I have put together a rough outline of what I might teach, but since you will be the only student, YOU tell ME what you want to learn and I will teach it to you. This is not going to be cheap. The cost is $1900 and does not include your airfare or hotel, but the beauty of this is that you can learn much more in this class than the cost of your tuition. I have spent many years and tens of thousands of dollars to learn what I know. You have access to all that knowledge for less than 2K!

In addition to that, you will receive my Instant and Rapid Induction DVD (value $109.95)My Dave Elman Induction DVD (value $49.95), and a copy of my upcoming Street Hypnosis DVD Course (value $249.95). That's over $400.00 in bonuses!

As an added bonus, you also get three private mentoring calls with me to ensure your success!

Email me at sean@worldsfastesthypnotist.com to discuss options.

Annapolis Street Hypnosis Outing

Brian, Cliff, Ian and I were in Annapolis Sunday, doing street hypnosis. Brian and Ian did most of the inductions, (18 and 11 inductions respectively), with Cliff and me acting as camera crew. Still Cliff and I did some inductions just to keep up appearances. It was a good outing and we'll probably go out again in a couple of weeks to Alexandria or Fells Point. We used Brians cool new signs and they seemed to attract the crowd very well.

I just posted the latest edition of the Extreme Street Hypnosis Newsletter and included a new video which shows why the hand drop induction should always be done with the subject seated.

I'm just getting ready for my Instant and Rapid Induction class 18-19 October in Ottawa. Kendra McCaskill has been organizing it and I think it's going to be a blast!

We got an email from Sean this week. He's going to college in Vermont at Norwich University. Norwich is a military academy and Sean was asked to do a hypnosis show in a couple of weeks that may have up to 350 people in the audience. Way to go Sean!

Sleep! (less) in Seattle

Just arrived home after teaching instant and rapid inductions in Seattle, Washington. This was especially fun for me because I got to teach with Keith Livingston of hypnosis101.com. Keith is an outstanding NLP and hypnosis instructor and a really great guy. The weekend started out a little shaky when Keith sprained his ankle playing basketball the night before the class began. Keith is a true professional and "played hurt"! The students were lots of fun and it didn't take long before they were knocking one another down with hand drop and arm pull inductions. Sunday we went on a field trip to a local park and hypnotized some strangers who happend to be out picnicking in the beautiful weather. I'll be posting some video of the weekend as soon as the editing is done.

My next class will be in Ottawa, October 18-19. Kenda McCaskill of Hypnotic Solutions in Stittsville, Ontario is organizing the class. She can be reached at 613-852-7658

Now I'm planning an instant and rapid induction class in Orlando, Florida 21-22 March 2009. I am looking for advice on where to hold the class. My choices are one hotel that is about a mile from the airport, but 22 miles from Disney World, and another hotel very close to Disney World. If you have an opinion as to which location would be better for students, I'd love to hear from you.

Reader Question:
Hi Mr. Sean! I like your videos and i have a question:
Is it important to say loud "Sleep" or is it just more effective to shock someone?
I started to learn hypnosis recently. I hope this not was a stupid question :D
please reply thanks!:D Greeting from Hungary.

Sean's Answer:
This is a very good question. You need to do both. The shock sets the person up for the suggestion. You then have 1/2 second to give the suggestion of "Sleep!" or "Relax!" and this sends the person into hypnosis. As with all other inductions, it makes sense to follow this with deepeners to stabilize the trance. Good question!

Reader Question:
How do you deal with a "hypnotic hangover"?

Sean's Answer:
Sometimes a subject will emerge from hypnosis and complain of a headache, nausea, dizziness, or may feel that she's still in hypnosis. This will happen more often if you emerge the subject quickly. This is extremely easy to fix! All you do is rehypnotize her and then emerge her again SLOWLY. As you count her up, give her lots of suggestions for clear-headedness, energy and other good feelings. That's it!

Beware Short Skirts
I was in Ocean City, Maryland, last weekend, performing street hypnosis. It's summer, so many of the women were wearing short skirts. Now, while these can make your video very popular on Youtube (pretty girl = many views) they can also spoil your performance and here's why. I usually do stand-up inductions for the men, but with the women, I usually employ a seated hand drop induction. I need my subject to feel comfortable and secure, but if she is wearing a miniskirt, this may cause her to hold back a little. Imagine this. She is relaxing, letting go, and suddenly she thinks to herself, "Is my skirt riding up?" This will bring her out of trance. The solution? Ask one of the guys in the crowd to lend her his jacket so you can cover her legs and make her feel more comfortable. He'll be happy to do it and she'll feel much more relaxed and will go much deeper into trance.
Finger Magnets - Suggestibility or Trick?
A discussion has been going on on one of my favorite newsgroups, Nathan's KeysToTheMind, about the finger magnets test. Specifically whether or not it is a test of suggestibility or if it's just a trick. In fact, it is both, and here is how it works. Tell your subject to press her palms together and then interlock her fingers tightly, but to leave the index fingers sticking out, about an inch apart. Have her squeeze her hands tightly together, lock her elbows and look at you through the gap in her index fingers. Then ask her to imagine that there are powerful magnets in the tips of her index fingers and they are attracting one another. The attraction gets stronger and stronger! In just a few moments, her fingertips should touch. In fact, the only way your subject can keep the finger tips from touching is by actively keeping them apart. The reason for this is because with the hands firmly clasped the fingertips naturally come together. That is the "trick" part of this. If her fingertips do not touch, she is resisting you! So it's not so much of a suggestibility test as it is a test for resistance! "finger magnets" makes a nice demonstration, but it is especially useful to determine if your subject REALLY wants to be hypnotized. Here's a video that shows "finger magnets".

Reader Question:
How do you obtain somnambulism with a subject after performing an instant induction?

Sean's Answer:
Many people will drop immediately into somnambulism (deep trance) as soon as you do the instant induction. I always follow the instant induction with a deepening technique such as the 10-1 count. "In a moment I will count from ten down to one. Let each number I say take you deeper... and deeper, so that by the time I reach the number one, you will be even deeper relaxed." Count down slowly. Time each number to coincide with an exhale... and this will deepen the trance.

Big news in this issue. We talk about street skits, the myth of the "mysterious pressure point", and how to obtain deep trance using an instant induction.

The EXTREME Street Hypnosis Newsletter is now read in 40 countries!
Safety

The Mysterious Pressure Point
It never fails. Every time I post a new video of an instant induction on youtube, one or two newbies offer their opinion that I have undoubtedly pressed "the pressure point on her neck, causing her to drop into unconsciousness." The myth of the mysterious pressure point is quite widespread, but the reality is...it doesn't exist! Another widespread myth is that there is a pressure point on the shoulder (remember Spock's Vulcan neck pinch?) and I am sometimes asked if I employ that. It also does not exist.

The reality is that when I perform the slight, unexpected pull to the arm, this is all that's needed to provide the shock necessary for the induction. ALWAYS check to make sure the individual has no arm or neck issues before doing this induction.
Street Skits

My Cigarette Tastes Awful!
We were in Ocean City, Maryland doing street hypnosis and I decided to do an old Ormond McGill trick. After an "arm pull" instant induction and some deepening, I told the young man that the next time he smoked a cigarette, it would taste like burning rubber. In fact, each drag would get worse and worse. Then I had him open his eyes. The part I found most interesting was that even though the cigarette tasted awful (he was really grimacing) he kept puffing as if to convince himself that the taste would not get better, only worse. Since I had not secured his permission before doing this gag, I gave him the choice of keeping the suggestion for the rest of the night. He refused, so I removed the suggestion. Here's the video.

Reader Question:
How long does it take before you can give the subject suggestions?

Sean's Answer:
It depends. Some subjects will accept suggestions immediately after you induce them. Others require a bit of deepening. In general, I will induce and then do several deepeners to make sure the subject is fairly deep. You need to have somnambulism in most cases for the subject to take significant suggestions. Start out with simple suggestions such as "eye lock," and then gradually work up to more complicated suggestions and post hypnotic suggestions. Each suggestion executed will tend to deepen the trance and lay the groundwork for the next suggestion.

Age Regressions
Sometimes it can be fun to suggest to a subject that she is a young child again and then ask the child to describe her favorite toys, what she likes to do, etc. The danger is that sometimes a subject may have had an unhappy childhood or possibly a very traumatic one. This could result in an abreaction, so to avoid this, when suggesting age regression ALWAYS specify that the subject is going back to a HAPPY time as a child. Repeat several times that she will recall happy times only. This issue features the return of the young woman whom many of my youtube viewers have asked for. FYI, she's a very nice, young person.

My Subject was Startled

Reader Question
I tried the hand drop induction on my mom, but when I flipped my hand out and shouted "Sleep!" she popped open her eyes and said that I scared her. She said it would be all right for me to hypnotize her. What went wrong?

Sean's Answer
It sounds like you did everything right. Although hypnotizing family members can sometimes be problematic, I don't think that is why the induction failed. The purpose of flipping your hand out suddenly IS to shock the subject. In the moment when she is feeling the excitement, you give the command, "Sleep!" and she will drop into hypnosis. Sometimes a person will react with great shock or even scream when you flip your hand out. They are actually in hypnosis even though their eyes are open. When this happens, stay with them. Pass your hand from the subject's forehead, down over the eyes and gently say, "Now close your eyes and relax." Continue deepening and you have hypnosis.

111 Instant Inductions in a Weekend
I received this note from fellow speed hypnotist Nancy McCune of Nashville Hypnosis. "I went to the 'Galactic Expo' last weekend. I took my 'Free Hypnosis Today' sign, all my recorded stuff and had a blast! I did rapid inductions and did 63 people on Saturday (10 - 7) and when I got there on Sunday my able assistant announced that no way was she going to let me do that on Sunday. So she scheduled only six per hour so only did 48!! I sold a bunch of audios and best of all have 2 new multiple session clients!" Thanks very much for the sign idea, Nancy. 111 instant inductions in a weekend? You're an animal!!! If you want to share a report of some street hypnosis, send an email to sean@worldsfastesthypnotist.com and I may include it here. You've set the bar awfully high, Nancy!

"Waking Hypnosis"

Here's a way to clear the way to actual hypnosis. Suggest that your subject engage in an "imagination game" (Thanks for the tip, Brian.) and move from this to actual hypnosis. Waking trance is a lot of fun to do. It takes some practice, but once you get this perfected, you can really impress the crowd. Here's this issue's featured video of "Waking Hypnosis".

Who Won the Cool Prize?

This really cool, old book, packed with very interesting tidbits about hypnosis was won by Jason Gordon CH of Gordon Hypnosis in Ontario, Canada. Congratulations, Gordon!
Some have asked if a reprint is available and the answer is yes! Here is a link to the reprint on Amazon.

The Best Induction for a Beginner

Reader Question
Is the Dave Elman the best induction for a new person to do?

Sean's Answer
Dave Elman's "three-minute routine" is the most reliable rapid induction for a beginner. As far as super-rapid inductions go, I favor the seated hand drop for beginners. There are fewer "moving parts" than in other super rapids and since the subject is seated, it is safer. Standing inductions have their associated risks since you need to make sure the subject remains upright. More on this next issue.

Spotlight On Brian David Phillips

Name: Brian David Phillips
Home Base: Taiwan
Brian David Phillips Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the English Department at National Chengchi University, a prestigious university in Taiwan. He is a Board Certified Hypnotist (Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Hypnosis Instructor Trainer) and is the president of the Society of Experiential Trance. (SET). Brian shared a LOT of information, so I have continued his responses on my blog. Don't miss out. Click on "MORE" for his extended answers.
Sean When doing "Walkabout Trance", what are some of the methods you use to entice people to be hypnotized?
BDP I use quite a few different "approaches" but, honestly, most of the time rely upon a few simple ones.
First, a LOT of the time I don't need to approach people because they approach me. That's right, they will ask me about hypnosis. Living in Asia, I have grown accustomed to carrying what I guess one would call a man-bag. Rather than having keys, wallet, cellphone or the like in my pockets, I keep all that in a bag I carry around with me. Well, since I've got this big ol' thing with me all the time (my bag is large enough to accommodate my notebook computer and a number of books at any given time), I printed off a 4X6 card on purple cardstock that has my logo (the "eye of experiential trance") and the word Hypnosis in big characters in English and Chinese (in the part of the planet I live in, Chinese is the local language - yes, I really have hypnotized a LOT of folks through interpretation, see my webpages for some examples, both on and off the street), laminated the card, and fixed it to my bag so it's hanging on the side as a walking billboard of sorts where ever I go. Seeing that card will pique the interest of a whole lot of folks. While I know a bucketful of hypnotists and hypnosis is just common everyday stuff for me, most folks never meet a "real" hypnotist in their entire lives so seeing that card will get the ol' curiousity cat running and many will ask my about it. I then go into a nice little pretalk about how I'm a genuine hypnotist and answer their questions while presenting a playful "you wanna give it a go?" attitude. From there, it is usually not difficult to go into some simple trance effect demonstrations. MORE

Sean Could you please share a safety hint for aspiring street hypnotists?
BDP Consent, consent, consent. By consent, I mean informed consent. I never use covert or shock inductions on unsuspecting people. There are folks who do this who are able to do so and get away with it, but I have seen too many people attempt these without proper context grounding or skill competence and then they open themselves up to possible safety concerns (such as getting your butt kicked by someone who is angry about being approached in that way).
I strongly suggest that folks not do street hypnosis with minors without explicit parental permission (from a parent who is actually present, not the classic "I called my Mom and she said it's okay" gambit). I tell kids that while I can't hypnotize them on the street at that moment without their parents, I do occasionally do shows or events for schools so they can talk to their classmates and teachers about inviting me to their school or they can tell their parents I have a family oriented show they can all come to (I give them my business card to give to their parents and if I have a show flyer I give them that). MORE

Sean What is your favorite induction to use during walkabout trance?
BDP My absolute favorite is the Phillips Arm Pull Induction. This is a variation of the classic armpull with fixation with a twist. I have a couple videos on my webpages where I use this induction, including a piece where I teach it online, and I teach it in many of my classes with a bit more of the nuances. However, the setup is the key. I start by taking the trance partner's hand and do a bit of filler patter about how when I say "sleep" even though sleep is not hypnosis but when I say sleep they will close their eyes and just let everything go, AS IF they are turning off a switch and their body and mind just shut down relaxing deeply and wonderfully. At this point I will then ask, "are you right or left handed?" Regardless of what they say, I then say "oh, then I need your other hand" and switch hands that I am holding. This is very important. I then hold the hand MORE
Sean What advice would you give to aspiring street hypnotists?
BDP I know this is Sean Michael Andrews' newsletter but the absolutely first advice I give to aspiring street hypnotists is to take a few of my courses. Of course, that's pretty much the same advice I give anyone and everyone. So, just imagine I'm standing in front of you and you're staring into my incredibly deep and penetrating and hypnotic eyes while I wave my fingers in front of you hypnotically while my influential and hypnotic voice slowly drones on "you will take my courses, you will take my courses, you will take my courses" over and over and over as you find yourself compelled to click on my course links and register for any and all course offerings I might have at the moment. Or, not. :-)
Seriously, while I am certainly always happy to have more and more students (more than happy, actually), it is getting some competent training that is important. If you're not familiar with hypnosis then take a good solid course (preferably one that either focuses on or at least includes speed hypnosis). Choose a teacher who has a solid reputation as well as competence in the sort of hypnosis you see yourself wishing to pursue.
Read as much as you can about hypnosis in general and if you are looking for street hypnosis information then get information specific to that. Sean's newsletter has many valuable insights so be sure to read it.
Join online hypnosis forums where street hypnosis is welcome. Some of the forums discourage folks from doing any sort of entertainment or recreational hypnosis so you're not going to get much helpful guidance on doing it well in those sort of forums. You might consider joining an open community group such as the Hypnosis Technique Exchange at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hypnosistechniqueexchange as there are many inductions archived in the messages there and other forums such as Sean's yahoogroup for more specific information exchange. "Waking Hypnosis"

According to Ormond McGill in his "Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism," waking hypnosis is an informal trance. All you need is a subject with a good imagination. Start with locking your subject's hands together and then proceed from there. The commands should be clear, emphatic and rapid-fire so that the subject goes quickly from one demonstration to another without too much time to think about what is going on. It's important to make sure your subject keeps her eyes locked on yours. This informal trance can be turned into a formal trance at any time with a slight movement and the command, "Sleep!" Here's another example of a waking trance.

Street Approaches

Reader Question
How long would you expect a street induction to take on average with say a subject who wants to but has trouble completely letting go and what would be your patter beforehand and what induction would you use?

Sean's Answer
On a cold walk-up, the patter would be, "I'm out here demonstrating hypnosis and how quickly it can be achieved. I gotta warn you. Everyone I've hypnotized tonight said it felt wonderful. Would you like to experience hypnosis and feel wonderful?" Providing the answer is yes, I say, "I do instant inductions, so here's how it works. In a moment I'm going to ask you to give me your hand. I will shake your hand down. When I do, your eyes close down, your head falls forward and you go into a pleasant, deep, hypnotic slumber. And it feels wonderful! Sound good? Give me your hand. Take a step toward me. Put your feet together. Look at me right here. Sleep!" (Providing it's an arm pull induction I'm doing. I guess that would take about 30 seconds. Whether or not she has trouble letting go wouldn't enter into it. When she gets the shock, she'll let go. The confidence you exude will override her doubts about her ability to let go.

Seated or Standing?
Many rapid inductions can be done either seated or standing, but some are best done seated. The "hand drop" induction is very effective, but when the induction is triggered, the natural tendency for the subject is to lurch forward. This is why this induction is best done seated. Also, I recommend that you do the hand drop with your chair to the side of the subject's chair because this will enable you to control her better. Here's a tip on deepening the trance. Keep one hand on her shoulder after you trigger the induction. Press down as she exhales and ease up on the pressure as she inhales. This will deepen her trance state.
Fun on an Airplane

"I'm scared to death of flying!"
I went to Oklahoma City last Friday to meet with Patrick Coleman, a very talented hypnotist who specializes in pain control and specifically dental hypnosis. On my way home, on takeoff from OKC, the young woman next to me buried her head in her hands, so I asked her if she was all right. "I'm scared to death of flying!" she said. For those of you who thought instant inductions were just for fun, read on.... I introduced myself and told her that I could take away the fear. I did a hand drop induction and deepened her. Then I said "In a moment I'm going to pick up your hand and drop it. When I do you will be able to imagine you are on the most wonderful vacation ever. Go wherever you want with whomever you want. Do what you want to do, eat what you want to eat and drink what you want to drink. Any voices you hear or bumps you feel will just be a part of the imagined vacation and you will have a ball!" I dropped her hand and said "Be there!" Well, this lady smiled all the way to Atlanta. She didn't emerge until we landed and I counted her up as we taxied to the terminal.

Camera Safety

We love to capture our instant inductions on film, but we need to look out for our cameramen as well as our subjects. Often the cameraman will be so intent on documenting the hypnosis, that he could be knocked down by a passerby or vehicle. This subject came up in a recent class. One of my students had a lot of experience in shooting films and he gave me a great idea. Get one of those reflective vests, similar to those worn by road crews, and have "Camera Crew" or something similar printed on the back of it. This lends more credibility to your demonstration AND keeps your cameraman safe. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Add This Book to your Library!

I found a classic hypnosis book in a used book store recently. The last book prize I offered was out of print, but this one is really special. Sure, you could buy the reprint on Amazon, but this is an edtion from 1923 with some extra stuff about sales thrown in. I found an old business card tucked into the book and I'm including it. You'll probably get a kick out of it. The book was originally printed in 1901. The book is titled "Practical Lessons in Hypnotism" by Wm Wesley Cook and it mixes hypnotism with old time Mesmerism. Here are some of the interesting chapter titles.

Criminal Hypnotism
Developing a Subject
Hypnotist's Secret
Mind Reading
This is really a cool book with lots of concepts that you will find amazing. To become eligible to win this book, just forward this newsletter (There is a link at the bottom that reads "Forward email") to three other hypnotists or other interested persons, and you will be in the drawing to win! The software will automatically register you. Good luck!

Last issue's winner of an advance copy of my new instructional DVD valued at $109.95, was Dave Buzzalini AKA DrDave of Las Vegas, Nevada. Congratulations, Dave! Dave liked the video so much, he wrote me a review that I've included in this issue.
Ask Sean

The Three Handshake Induction

Reader Question
I did a "finger magnet" suggestibility test. Then I went for a "congratulations" handshake which I intended to turn into a "three handshake" induction. It didn't work. What went wrong?

Sean's Answer
The Dave Elman "three handshake" induction is very effective if you explain to the subject exactly what will happen before you do the induction. Say, "I'm going to shake your hand three times. On the first handshake your eyes will feel heavy, droopy, drowsy and sleepy, but they won't close yet. On the second handshake they will become even heavier, but still you will manage just barely to keep them open. The third time I shake your hand, your eyes close down, your head drops forward and you go into a pleasant, deep, hypnotic slumber. Does that sound good?"
If the subject says, "Yes.", do the induction after telling him that his legs will remain firm beneath him. On the third handshake pull the hand down and toward you sharply and shout, "Sleep!" Continue talking and deepen the subject.

Note: Always check to make sure the subject doesn't have any injuries or physical limitations that would cause him/her to be injured with the arm pull.

Spotlight On Keith Livingston

Name: Keith Livingston (hypnosis101.com)

Home Base: Seattle

I first became aware of Keith about four years ago when I read his modified Dave Elman induction in an NLP class I was taking. The induction was written so well that anyone could hypnotize a subject, just by reading the words. I thought that was pretty amazing! Last month I got to meet Keith and I can say that he is as personable face-to-face as he is in his videos. I am happy to feature Keith in this edition of the newsletter!

Hypnotist and hypnosis educator Keith Livingston is the author of more than 15 NLP and hypnosis related programs including a complete hypnosis certification program, programs on Master Practitioner NLP techniques such as the Milton Model, Sleight of Mouth, Advanced Metaphor and more. He's also appeared on television and radio numerous times as an expert on NLP/hypnosis, including an appearance on the John Walsh show.

Sean Can you tell us a little bit about the modified Dave Elman induction on your website?
Keith Sure. So many people want to learn a good, reasonably quick, effective induction. The Elman is one of my favorites so I wrote it out for folks. The original wording could have been a little tighter so I changed a bit of the wording. It's a fun induction!
Sean How important is NLP to a hypnotist?
Keith Without NLP, you're working with one arm tied behind your back. Whenever I hear a hypnotist talking who does not have NLP training I wonder how they do it.
Sean When you encounter an abreaction during recreational hypnosis, what is your preferred method to deal with this?
Keith I do the same thing I do in a session. When someone gets upset during hypnosis, you treat them exactly as you would any person who is upset. There's a story about student who once asked a prominent hypnotherapist, "What do you do if someone starts to cry when they're in trance?" "I hand them a tissue," he said. That's my theory too!
Sean What is it that you bring that's unique to the field of hypnosis?
Keith Great question. I see a lot of hypnosis instructors giving step-by-step instruction. And that's great as a first step or as part of your hypnosis training. But if all you get is a procedure, that's all you'll ever be able to do. I believe strongly that it's crucial to understand why things work--the concepts behind the steps. I spend practically all my time looking at hypnosis from that angle. Why does induction "A" work better than induction"B" with this type of person. What is hypnosis really? What elements does an induction have to have in order to be effective? Then I teach those concepts to people along with step-by-step examples. It's the difference between giving someone directions to your house and teaching them how to read a map. Teach them how to read a map and they can go anywhere!

"That's Right"

Assisting Trance
Last week I was working with a client for smoking cessation and when the session was over, she giggled and said, "You sure do say "That's Right" a lot!" She is absolutely right about that, and here is why. "That's right." and "Good." are not just filler words. Your client/subject has probably never been hypnotized before and is probably wondering if she's doing it right. To let her know that she's going into hypnosis, it helps to say something like "Good." or "That's right." every time she does something that seems trancy. Say it if she swallows, clears her throat, scratches her ear, relaxes her shoulders, or anything else. This will let her know that she's doing well and will assist her in going into hypnosis. Here's a video of a Dave Elman induction. See if you can count how many times I say those words.

Interview with Brian David Phillips

Here is the full version of the interview with hypnosis educator and stage hypnotist Brian David Phillips. There's a lot of information here, so enjoy!

Sean-When doing “Walkabout Trance”, what are some of the methods you use to entice people to be hypnotized?

BDP-I use quite a few different "approaches" but, honestly, most of the time rely upon a few simple ones.

Well, since I've got this big ol' thing with me all the time (my bag is large enough to accommodate my notebook computer and a number of books at any given time), I printed off a 4X6 card on purple cardstock that has my logo (the "eye of experiential trance") and the word Hypnosis in big characters in English and Chinese (in the part of the planet I live in, Chinese is the local language - yes, I really have hypnotized a LOT of folks through interpretation, see my webpages for some examples, both on and off the street), laminated the card, and fixed it to my bag so it's hanging on the side as a walking billboard of sorts where every I go.

Second, when trolling for trance partners (I tend to refer to folks as trance partners and the hypnotist as a trance guide as I honestly don't like the word "subject" as it implies an attitude of control while I want a partner in the hypnotic context), I will go to places frequented by young people (university age or so - I prefer not to do Walkabout Trance with anyone under the age of majority unless their parents are there and give specific permission), and just walk up to a group of friendly looking folks (a good mix of men and women is often helpful) and just tell them flat out that I'm a hypnotist and looking to play with folks with some demonstrations of some simple imagination games (classic suggestibility tests) which I can then leverage into hypnosis. I often use the stiff arm catalepsy test and then immediately convert that into the hand stuck on the head which can then be rolled into other genuine effects. Lately, I've been starting out with the pencil stuck to the fingers test (although I will occasionally use one of my business cards for that test so that I can then give them the card as a "souvenir" of their experience). That test can be rolled into other effects immediately and is great in that it engages the imagination right off the bat.

Third. I use mentalism (mental magic) effects as openers. Sometimes I will take out a blank business card and looking like I need to write something down approach someone asking to borrow their pen. Most folks will not begrudge you the use of their pen. I then write a series of numbers on the front of the card and return the pen and ask the person to cross off one of the numbers. When they do, I will walk a few feet away and ask them to turn the card over and there is the number they crossed off. Now, it's as simple mentalism effect and I use some NLPish language patterns and covert suggestion to increase my chances for success (I don't use magic tricks that rely upon gimmicks or gadgets, I use pure mental forces or psychological effects as it allows me to segue seamlessly into hypnotic effects). Since it's a psychological force, I have exit strategies to go into another effect (usually an ideomotor effect) if the original one fails (which it usually does not as I have a 99% success rate with it). Sorry, I won't describe the entire mechanics of the effect here (folks are certainly welcome to take one of my courses in Walkabout Trance to learn it - or purchase a nice simple beginner's text on magic; Richard Rumble teaches a workshop on magic tricks for hypnotists that folks can contact him about) . . . suffice it to say, using a magic trick or mentalism effect works great.

Fourth, I have a version of my business card that has a pendulum answer chart for ideomotor autoquestioning printed on the back. I will approach folks with a card and a pendulum in hand and teach them how to use the pendulum for autoquestioning. I then let them keep the card for their own use later (a nice way to make sure folks hold on to your business card). Many times I give pendulums to folks as gifts as well (I always give small purple crystal pendulums to my clients in my clinical work). Most folks are fascinated by how the subconscious moves the pendulum for autoquestioning and you can continue to use the pendulum for a fixation induction or just move into any other induction as appropriate.

Sean-Could you please share a safety hint for aspiring street hypnotists?

BDP-Consent, consent, consent.

I strongly suggest that folks not do street hypnosis with minors without explicit parental permission (from a parent who is actually present, not the classic "I called my Mom and she said it's okay gambit").

Always be aware of foot traffic and street traffic. Do NOT hypnotize anyone near the edge of a road or anywhere that bikes, cars, busses, airplanes, alien starcraft, or anything else might happen through. If you are on a sidewalk, stand away from the edge of the street, have the trance partner's back to the buildings and stand between the trance partner and the street so you can control any unplanned movements and keep them safe and away from traffic.

Before doing a shock induction that relies upon sharp shock physical movements, verify that the person is physically able to handle them. Leave folks better than you found them, not worse. Too many people who do physical pull or push or shock inductions do so in a very rough way which leave their trance partners sore or even injured. Sometimes even otherwise skilled hypnotists don't realize just how sharp they are pulling a person or that someone has limb or muscle issues. As an example, I met a young woman once who refused to ever be hypnotized again because she had once been hypnotized by a "world famous" hypnotist (who even teaches courses in instant and rapid inductions) who used an arm catalepsy induction with a pull finish that left her with a torn muscle and aggravated her pre-existing whiplash. If you do shock inductions then do them within safety contexts. They are very safe when done properly and can even be done gently with folks for whom the more powerful movements are inappropriate. Of course, part of that safety tip is to have proper training, practice, and experience. Take care of your trance partners and they will respond to you.

Sean-What is your favorite induction to use during walkabout trance?

BDP-My absolute favorite is the Phillips Arm Pull Induction. I then hold the hand with one of my hands and point to my eyes and tell them to look into my eyes (yes, I am Captain Cliché), place my free hand upon their shoulder with fingers extended toward the middle of the back and a thumb gently at the base of the neck. While looking into their eyes, I breathe deeply and begin to relax myself, causing my eyes to defocus as I continue breathing and then on an exhale gently pull the arm forward, say "sleep" and gently pull the body forward while giving a simultaneous tap single at the base of the neck for the head to go forward. Typically, they slump forward AS IF they've been pulled hard even though the actual physical movements are soft. I then balance their bodies with one hand and use the other to gently roll the head while giving deepening patter suggestions. Now, the key to this is the hand switch. Whichever hand you end up holding is not important but because you made a bit of a fuss about switching them when you find out the trance partner's handedness it becomes a confusion focus. When I hold the hand prior to the induction moves I will often do so in an odd configuration that places my fingers upon their pulse which they also notice even though I do not mention it (more distraction or false focus guidance and intensification of their imaginative involvement). It's a nice induction and loads of fun, although, like many speed hypnosis inductions, requires timing and confidence.

As noted earlier, I will also often not use a formal induction and start off with a suggestibility effect which I convert into further effects, essentially becoming an induction in and of themselves. When doing group Walkabout Trance, we will often challenge one another to create new inductions or processes on the fly with folks (basically, one person in the group will select the potential walkup trance partner group - groups are best for this - and then give a challenge of an induction or even just say an object, shape, idea, or concept that the hypnotist must incorporate into the trance - yes, those familiar with my Walkabout Trance courses will recognize the Creative Trance Train activity I use in the classroom but taken into the real world). Anything can be an induction. While folks can certainly specialize in certain effects or inductions, taking things to the next level by creating new effects or processes on the fly can be a lot of fun (it certainly gets the adrenaline going).

Sean-What advice would you give to aspiring street hypnotists?

BDP-I know this is Sean Michael Andrews' newsletter but the absolutely first advice I give to aspiring street hypnotists is to take a few of my courses.

Read anything and everything you can get your hands on. Period, no matter how experienced a hypnotist you are, never assume you know everything you need to know. Take what you read from others and then play with it in practice, creatively play with it.

If you're new to this sort of thing then find some friends to practice with. Share ideas and techniques and practice them and then make them your own. Organize supportive events where you and others who share your interest can practice all of the various skillsets involved with street hypnosis or walkabout trance . . . approaches, suggestibility, sensory enhancement, inductions, effects, emergings, and more . . . in an environment of mutual support where you can freely practice and improve. Find appropriate online support groups where information is shared and experienced guidance is offered in a supportive environment.

Criminal Hypnotism

There's a story making the rounds about a criminal hypnotist who is operating in Northern Italy. The fellow supposedly hypnotises the shop girls and bank tellers and gets them to hand over hundreds of euros. Then he walks out with the money and the victim remembers nothing about the meeting until the end of the day when the till is several hundred euros short. The "evil hypnotist" angle is hard to resist, but this crime has nothing to do with hypnotism. This guy is a con artist, not a hypnotist. Here's a link to the CCTV of the crime.

I plan on getting out front on this one. This isn't the sort of coverage that we need.

Under-age Subjects

This subject came up in a recent class. A student asked about hypnotizing teens and children. Youngsters make wonderful subjects and they really enjoy the hypnotic experience. They can be very animated and entertaining subjects, but the hypnotist needs to be careful here. Always get a parent's permission before hypnotizing a minor. Although hypnotizing a minor is not a crime, this could be a really ugly situation if the parents object to the child being hypnotized. You don't need a signed form, just a nod from Mom or Dad will do. Kids will beg you to hypnotize them, but always ask for parental consent. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Keeping A Subject in Hypnosis - The Secret

How Did He Do That?
Some readers and youtube viewers have asked how I got the subject in my last featured video to stay in hypnosis for so long since I was not talking to her. As you know, left on her own, a subject will eventually emerge from hypnosis all by herself. Here's the secret. Simply tell her "With each exhale you go deeper into hypnosis and with each exhale, count silently backwards from one hundred, one number with each exhale." That will keep her busy and in trance at least until she reaches the number one. Also, No, she wasn't really there for three days. That was a joke. :-)

Featured Video

This was an Interesting One!
We were in Hermosa Beach, CA doing street hypnosis. One of the group, Kurt, was working the crowd to find hypnotic subjects for us. Kurt said to me, "I have a good one for you over here." I followed Kurt around the crowd and came upon This Guy... Maybe it was all the tattoos, or maybe it was the fact that he was at least a foot taller than me. But I decided to pull out the big guns. I did a Gil Boyne-style arm-pull induction and he dropped like a rock. Thanks, Gil! Here's a link to the video.

Extreme Street Hypnosis Issue 12

Subject: Extreme Street Hypnosis Tips
Sean Michael Andrews' Street Hypnosis Safety

An Unusual Reaction!
Yet another anonymous report on a near disaster. "I was doing a hand drop instant induction on a young woman. We were seated side by side, facing one another in plastic chairs, so I figured this was a pretty safe set-up. When I flipped my hand out, her body went straight and rigid and then loose as pudding! This caused her chair to fly backwards. I grabbed her to keep her from falling and she knocked me out of my chair and we wound up on the floor!

I managed to keep her from hurting herself by sacrificing my own body. Just wanted to mention this so that other street hypnotists can be on the lookout for it!"

You never know how a subject will react when you trigger the induction. While this type of reaction is rare, you need to be ready for it. Always be ready to catch your subject and guide her gently to the floor. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!
Want to Win a Cool Prize?

I know that many of my readers are therapists and use the instant inductions to hypnotize engineers, mathematicians and other analytical types. These therapists are often looking for marketing ideas and I have a great one for this month's prize for forwarding this email to at least three other hypnotists. I have recorded my speech on DVD that I do at

Curves for Women
studios. I have gotten more clients out of Curves than any other place where I have marketed, and I will show you how to do the same. I will even include my hints on how to set up the talks. When the final editing is done, this DVD will be offered for $79.00. The prize I'm offering is the rough cut and includes the whole talk. There's stuff in here that will never again see the light of day, but you get to see it if you are the lucky reader chosen from those who forward this to at least three other hypnotists.

Some readers have asked how they can more easily send the newsletter out to qualify. Try this. Look in the phone book or do an on-line search for hypnotists in your area. When you forward this newsletter, simply say this "I received an interesting newsletter from a hypnotist who specializes in instant and rapid inductions and I thought it might be of interest to you. Enjoy! If you sign up, you can unsubscribe with one click at any time and he promises that he will NEVER share your email address with ANYONE!"

Walkabout Trance - A Review

I attended Brian David Phillips' Walkabout Trance training in Hermosa Beach, CA on 8 and 9 February 2008. The training was held at the Beach House Hotel which is right on the water and the facilities were outstanding. Brian is a very funny, extremely knowledgeable speaker and kept the class flowing nicely. Because of Brian's reputation, the training was very well attended and many of the leading hypnotists from this country and others attended the class. I originally attended because I wanted to find out more about Brian's instant inductions which are much softer than the ones I use.

Here are some data points that I found interesting in the training A lot of other material was covered.

  • Brian taught some excellent suggestibility tests and routines which can be made to flow into a very entertaining demo during a cold walk-up. One starts with giving the subject a business card, suggesting that the subject's fingers are now tightening on the card and then suggesting the card can not be dropped. Then switch the card to the other hand where it becomes stuck. You could then tell the subject that the best way to un-stick the card is to put it in his pocket! What a great routine to add to your elevator speech! You could also roll into sticking the person's hand to his head, the other hand to his hip, then stick one of his feet to the floor. The Flow of the operation was what was most interesting to learn. After physical effects are achieved, then psychological effects can be added, (losing name, stuttering, etc)
  • He offered lots of suggestions on how to effect the cold walk up, including magic tricks, dumb questions, etc. I like the idea of calling the exercise an "imagination game" instead of suggestibility test. My favorite way to get the ball rolling is to set up my camera and do my brief pre-talk until interested people stop to see what's going on.
  • Brian demonstrated his "happy balloons" routine which I found very instructive. When a subject does not readilly accept the suggestion that his hands are being lifted by the balloons, Brian will "help" his hands begin to rise, and this seems to work well. This was a bit of a revelation to me. Also, if he is doing arm levitation with a standing subject, he always starts with the subject's arms straight out in front of her. Once during a "happy balloons" demo with a very good subject, Brian asked the subject to open his eyes and look up and tell us what color the balloons were. "Red!" said the subject. It was a good demo!
  • "How does it feel when you meditate?" Not a bad question to ask a subject to put her in the right frame of mind to enter the altered state of hypnosis.
  • Brian tends to touch subjects on the third eye when suggesting that a suggestion is locked in but he does a little variation that I found interesting. He acts as though he is turning a five-position key as the suggestion is locked in.
  • One NLP technique he demonstrated was after anchoring a negative feeling to the subject's shoulder, he moved it gradually down the arm and out the end of her fingers while suggesting the negativity leave. Nice touch.
  • The "happy finger" demo was good. He started out with the "eleven fingers" routine and then suggested that the extra finger could be a "happy finger" and then anchored a happy feeling to that finger. Every time the subject strokes the finger, happy feelings come up and intensify.
  • A book was recommended for ice breakers called Psychological Subtleties in Mentalism by Banachek. This book appears to be out of print, so if any readers know of where this book can be found, please email me.
  • The class included an exercise the first day at lunch where groups went down to the promenade and performed simple trance activities such as suggestibility tests with strangers. Some of the groups did amazingly well.
  • A phrase Brian uses that I particularly like is "In just a few seconds, which is all the time you need, you can (fill in the blank). Could be "fall into a trance" or "notice that your hand is rising" Good phrase.

Now a bit about Brian's seated, softer arm pull induction. My arm pull us usually quite sharp so that I can achieve the shock necessary to activate the "fight or flight" mechanism. I then shout in the word "Sleep!" and continue with a head rotation and further suggestions of deepening. I was intrigued by Brian's method. Holding th subject's hand, he uses confusion by asking the subject if she is right handed or left handed. Whichever the answer, he then switches to her other hand. then he gives the hand a soft pull as he lightly taps on the back of her neck and quietly says, "Sleep," and gently rocks the subject while deepening. This works very well with a subect who has already been in trance or is experienced in hypnosis. It can be problematic with a subject who has never been hypnotized UNLESS that subject is a natural somnambulist. In my therapy practice, I usually condition my clients for rapid induction so that they can quickly enter trance during the follow-on sessions. I believe that Brian's method will be very good to use in this setting.

As I mentioned earlier, Brian's class attracted some very heavy hitters in the hypnosis community and presented an outstanding networking opportunity. I'm very glad I attended!

READER'S QUESTION

Reader Question: "I did an instant inductions on my friend and when I told her that her eyes were locked shut, she opened them. What happened?"
Sean's Answer: Probably one of three things was missing.
You didn't keep talking after you triggered the induction.
You didn't sufficiently deepen the subject.
Your wording of the eye lock challenge allowed her to open his eyes. Remember to challenge her to TRY to open her eyes. "Try" implies failure.

Is She in Trance?

Signs of Hypnosis
According to Dave Elman the following physical indicators may be present in a subject who is in hypnosis:
Body warmth
Fluttering of the eyelids
Increased lacrimation (eyes watering)
Reddening of the eyes
Eyeballs going up into the head
In addition, these signs may be observed
Eyes tracking left and right beneath the eyelids
Increased swallowing
Deep "hypnotic" sigh

Street Hypnosis Safety

Don't Hurt Your Subjects
While the arm pull induction is very effective, you need to be careful when using it. If your subject has an arm or shoulder problem, you could aggravate a pre-existing injury. I recommend that you ask your subject if she suffers from any arm or shoulder problems before doing the induction. "I'm going to shake your hand down... You don't have any tennis elbow or shoulder problems, do you?" If she says "Yes" you'll have to do another induction like a finger snap or a hand drop which will be easier on the arm.

Reader Question: "I hypnotized some people at a party, but when I try it with my brother, it doesn't work and I can't figure out why. Any suggestions?"
Sean's Answer: Family members are often the worst subjects. Close friends can be difficult too. Most people think that hypnosis is very difficult to learn and so they won't believe you can put them into trance. No confidence in your ability means zero chance of success. Once your friends and family see you hypnotize others, they'll let you hypnotize them.

What's the Best "Rapid" vs. "Instant" Induction?
Elman "Three-Minute Routine"The most effective rapid induction is the Elman. This routine will produce trance very quickly and is useful for parties and street hypnosis. It starts out with eye catelepsy, then fractionation and a check for physical relaxation. Then comes amnesia for numbers and voila! Hypnosis! Here's a film example of the Elman. If you'd like the script, go here and sign up for the free hypnosis group. The script is in the files section.

Street Hypnosis Safety

Don't Hurt Your Subjects
Back in the "good old days", hypnotists would entertain the crowd by showing how a subject could be made insensitive to pain. One of the more popular demonstrations involved holding a lighted match or lighter under the subjects hand to show that the subject would not react to the heat. NEVER DO THIS!!! Although the subject may not react to the flame, she WILL burn! Anything that would harm a non-hypnotized person will also harm a hypnotized person. She just won't be aware of it until after she emerges. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Reader Question: "With the arm pull induction, is there some sort of 'pre-talk' that I could use for people who haven't been hypnotized before with any technique, and don't know anything about hypnosis? Any chance you could shed light on this, Sean?"

Sean's Answer: With the arm pull induction, just explain to the subject what you want her to do. Tell her, "In a moment I am going to ask for your hand. I will shake your hand down. When I do, your eyes close down, your head drops forward and you go into a pleasant, deep hypnotic slumber. And it feels really great! Does that sound good to your?" She will say, "Yes." Then do the induction. It will work great!

What's the Best Street Induction?

The "Arm Pull" InductionOne of the most effective "super rapid" inductions is the arm pull. It is flashy, effective and very quick. It can be gentle or it can be done in a manner that "looks" very dramatic, so it is very flexible. It can also be done as an "instant" induction. This is one of the inductions taught in the one-day Instant Induction class.

Street Hypnosis Safety

Don't Hurt Your Subjects
Insensitvity to pain...a staple of old hypnosis demonstrations used to be to get the subject into somnambulism, suggest anesthesia, and then run a hat pin through the subject's arm. Fun, huh? I thought this old trick had been put to rest, but then I found this video from a Russian TV show. After having her arm pierced with a lancet, the woman walks around the audience saying "Look! It doesn't hurt at all!!" Yes, Sean does speak Russian. The induction was edited out of this clip, and I believe he suggested that the wound would not bleed. Yes, you can do this. Interesting, but NEVER DO THIS!!! . Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

A Fun Act for the Great American Smoke Out

Cigarettes - Burning Rubber
Here's a fun suggestion to give a smoker. Obtain deep trance and say "When I snap my fingers, your cigarette will taste like burning rubber! When I snap them again, it tastes fine." This is an old stage trick but it works VERY well. If you want to have even more fun with this, suggest amnesia so that the smoker won't know why the cigarette tastes bad.

Reader Question: "I hypnotized a woman in a bar and told her that she would be unable to pick up her glass, but she picked up the glass.. Any idea why this post hypnotic suggestion failed?"

Sean's Answer: Probably there was a slight problem with the wording. Next time tell her that she will find that her glass is fused to the table and that the harder she TRIES to pick up the glass, the more it sticks to the bar. Two things are at work here. First, the word "try" implies difficutly or failure. Second, you have given her a double bind when you said that the harder she tries to do this, the more impossible it becomes. Do this and see how much better it works.

Rotating the Subject's Head

Why do the Head Rotation?
In many of my videos, you notice that just after the instant induction I begin to rotate the subject's head. The reason for this is, there are three semicircular canals in the inner ear, and the fluid in these canals lets you know if you are upright or tilting. Without these canals you would not be able to keep your balance. When I rotate a subject's head, this messes up the balance mechanism and helps the subject to go deeper into trance. Don't do this too much. About half a dozen rotations is fine.

Street Hypnosis Safety

The Neck Pull
The neck pull. Many prominent hypnotists use this technique, but it can harm a subject. If the subject has a preexisting neck injury, this would NOT be a good technique to use. I presume that the hypnotist in this video checked ahead of time before using this maneuver, but I post this as an example of what NOT to do if you are not certain of any problems with your subject. NEVER DO THIS!!! . Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Fun Things to Do Once They're in Trance

Stuck to Something
Here's a fun suggestion. You need a pretty good candidate for this one. Take her hand and press it onto a light pole or park bench, trash can, or whatever is handy. Say, "I'm going to count to three. With each number I say, feel your hand sticking to the pole. One... feel your hand sticking to the pole as if it was superglued there. Two... It's as if your hand was welded to the pole. And three... it's as if your hand and the pole were one single piece. In fact if you were to TRY to pull your hand off, it would stick even tighter. The harder you try to pull it off the tighter it sticks. TRY to pull it off and find that you can't!" For more fun, have her take her free hand and TRY to pull the other hand off. This is a very effective demonstration. The most important word in this is "TRY", which implies failure.

Reader's Question: "I hypnotized a friend at a party and told her that she would cluck like a chicken. She didn't do what I told her to do. Can you tell me how I can make this work?"

Sean's Answer:
For the record, I have never asked a subject to cluck like a chicken, bark like a dog or anything like that. I've even had subjects request that I do this with them! This is OLD stuff and if you think about it, it's not very entertaining. In extreme street hypnosis we emphasize lightning-fast inductions and respectful, yet extremely entertaining demonstrations. The reason why your friend didn't "cluck" is because she didn't like the suggestion. A subject in hypnosis always has the ability to refuse a suggestion that she doesn't like. If you make the suggestion appealing to the subject, she'll accept the suggestion. She just didn't think your suggestion would be good for her so she rejected it. That's what happened.

Prepare to Catch

Whenever you do a stand-up super-rapid induction, be prepared to catch your subject. Some people go into hypnosis so deeply that their knees may buckle and they can drop to the ground. Prepare yourself for this, and catch the subject under the arm pits and immediately say "Steel in your legs! Your legs are strong!" The subject will then stand safely. From this point, you can continue your induction. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Testing for Depth

Eye Lock
One of the first tests for depth of trance is the eye lock. This has two important uses. First, it is a good way for the hypnotist to see if the subject is in trance. Secondly, when the subject tries to open her eyes and finds that they won't open, she becomes convinced that she is in trance and will then go even deeper into hypnosis.

Fun Things to Do Once They're in Trance

Forget Your Name
Here's a fun thing to do with a good candidate. Take her hand and say, "I am writing your name on the back of your hand. In a moment, I will rub it off and your name will be erased from your mind ." Rub her hand a couple of times as if erasing the name. "And you now find that your name has been completely erased from your mind. In fact if you were to try to speak your name, you would not be able to do it. TRY to speak your name and find that you can't." The most important word in this is "TRY", which implies failure. For extra credit you can then give her a new name and have her say it a couple of times.

Website of Interest

Pnosis.com
Here's an interesting website. www.pnosis.com is a website run by hypnotist Ralph Benko. "The world of hypnosis is full of fascinating possibilities. But lots of hype. A few genius hypnotists, many capable practitioners, but there's some charlatans out there too." Ralph's site includes a "hall of fame" celebrating current masters of hypnosis and links to hypnosis research. He also has a newsletter. Check it out!

Reader's Question:
Are handshake inductions real? How do they work?

Sean's Answer:
There are two popular versions of the handshake induction. One is a shock induction where you jerk the subject's arm and then shout the command, "Sleep!" The second type is the handshake interrupt in which you start a handshake and then redirect the subject's attention. Then you deepen the trance state that the interruption has caused and the subject drops into hypnosis. Both of these inductions work very well and yes, they ARE real.

The Abreaction

Occasionally a subject will display what is known as an abreaction. This is when bottled-up emotions will surface and cause the subject to cry, laugh hysterically, or in some other way show strong emotion. This is very easy to control, but you need to be watching your subjects and catch this as soon as it starts. Otherwise it may cause a scene. Simply say to your subject in a calm, clear voice, "The scene fades and you tend to your breathing." Continue saying this until the episode passes. Then emerge the subject. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Testing for Depth

Arm Stiff and Rigid
After testing for eye lock, the next test is to suggest the subject's arm is stiff and rigid as an iron bar. Suggest that the arm is so rigid that it will not bend. Then tell the subject that the harder she tries to bend the arm, the more stiff and rigid it becomes. "Try to bend that arm and find that you can't!" Allow the subject to try to bend the arm for a few seconds and then say, "In a moment I will tap your hand and it will flop down like a limp rag." Tap the arm and it should flop down lifelessly at the subject's side. This way you know you have a good subject. This has two important uses. First, it is a good way for the hypnotist to see if the subject is in trance. Secondly, when the subject tries to bend her arm and finds that she can't, she becomes convinced that she is in trance and will then go even deeper into hypnosis.

Reader's Question:
I've watched your videos of you doing instant inductions in public. How do you get so many volunteers?
Sean's Answer:
Sometimes I work with two camera men. They film me as I talk about hypnosis... sort of like a television show. This gives me more credibility and makes people stop to see what's going on. "Hello. I'm Sean Michael Andrews, and we're here in Annapolis, Maryland to educate the public on how easilly one can enter this wonderful, relaxing state and just how quickly it can happen." As I continue talking about hypnosis, I'm scanning the crowd to find someone who looks interested, and then I approach. "Excuse me, would you like to experience hypnosis?"

Street Hypnosis Safety

Crowd Control

Street hypnosis is very entertaining and will almost always draw a crowd. I strongly recommend that you have several friends with you when you do this in public. Why? Well first of all it is nice to have someone who can explain what's going on to the policeman who arrives to investigate why a crowd has formed. "No officer, he is not assaulting that young woman. He's just demonstrating hypnosis." Secondly, your support team can make sure that the edge of the crowd does not spill into the street where they could be struck by a passing car. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Rotating Arms
After testing for catelepsy of the arm, the next test is to suggest the subject's hands can rotate all by themselves and will not stop rotating. Take the subject's arms by the wrists and begin rotating them in front of her. Suggest that her hands continue rotating all by themselves and it feels good for them to continue rotating. Once they are rotating all by themselves, start snapping your fingers and note that the faster you snap your fingers, the faster her hands rotate. Then say, "In a moment, I am going to ask you to TRY to stop rotating your hands, but you will find that the harder you TRY to stop rotating your hands, the faster they rotate. TRY to stop rotating your hands and find that you can't!" This has two important uses. First, it is a good way for the hypnotist to see if the subject is in trance. Fun Things to Do Once They're in Trance

Best Christmas Ever
Here's a fun thing to do with a good candidate. Tell her that when you drop her hand, she will go back to her best Christmas ever when she was a little girl. Stress that she will remember only HAPPY times. Most of the time you'll get a regression to 6 years old or younger. Then ask about the toys she received from Santa. This is pretty cute and lots of fun. Be prepared just in case of an abreaction, (Extreme Street Hypnosis issue six), but usually this is a fun regression.

Reader's Question:
I've watched your videos of instant inductions, but I wonder if the person has to be pre-hypnotized to make it work. It can't be that easy.

Sean's Answer:
Instant inductions are very effective if done right. With practice, you should be able to put about 85% of your volunteers into trance. Part of the trick is choosing candidates, and the rest is practice and confidence. Make sure your subject is willing. Never try to hypnotize someone who isn't interested in being hypnotized. It's just too hard. Exude confidence. If you don't feel confident, FAKE IT. This really raises your success percentage. Just get out there and do these inductions and your numbers will rise.

Don't Get Arrested!

You need to be smart about your choice of venues when doing street hypnosis. Public places such as parks and sidewalks are good venues, but you should always check to see if the local government regulates street performances. The fee for a permit is usually nominal, but if you neglect this step, you might be in for some trouble. A mall might seen like a great place to practice, but security will escort you outside very quickly. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Suggestibility Testing

Hands Locked
This is a really good way to start off a hypnosis demonstration. It's called a "hand lock" demonstration. Suggest that their hands are locked tight and the harder they try top pull them apart, the more they stick together. Count slowly from one to three, suggesting with each number their hands become locked more tightly together. Then say "Try to pull your hands apart, but notice the harder you try to pull them apart, the tighter they stick together!" Good candidates will lock up until you release them. Sometimes you can lock the whole room. Fun stuff!

X-Ray Scope
Cut the bottom out of a paper cup and tell the subject that the cup is an X-Ray scope that allows her to see through people's clothes. Her reaction may surprise you. She may be delighted to look through the scope at all the people. Then again she may act shocked and drop the cup. Watch the crowd. Many of them will act as though the X-Ray scope is real and may attempt to cover themselves. For more fun, you can borrow the scope from the subject just to see her reaction if you use it to look at her!

From time to time, this newsletter will focus on prominent street hypnotists around the country. This issue, we focus on KC2XL, a hypnotist who is doing some really innovative work that we love to watch.
Name: KC2XL on YouTube.com
Operational Area: NY and NJ. Available throughout the USA upon request
What I like best about street hypnosis: I like that street hypnosis forces me to combine manydifferent techniques while improviationally working with various people under circumstances and in surroundings that are quite different from a traditional clinical setting. I thoroughly enjoy conducting motivational hypnosis and hypnotherapy sessions; however, street hypnosis gives me the chance to dance on a high-wire without a net for an occasional change of pace.
My favorite induction: Although rapid inductions are fun, my favorite is any elegant, seamless, conversational induction.
What advice would you give an aspiring street hypnotist: Learn hypnosis safety, ethics and basics before attempting to hypnotize anyone. Once you've learned these things, practice as often as you can--always safely--and continue to study.

Perfect Balance!
Here's an important tip. Sometimes you may notice a candidate is so deep in hypnosis that she begins to sway back and forth. She may be sitting or standing. This is a good time to suggest to her that even though she is going deeper into hypnosis, she remains in perfect balance. This will deepen the trance and will also keep her from toppling!

More on "This Cigarette Tastes Awful!" Routine

We've had several questions on how to do the "This cigarette tastes awful!" routine, so here is a detailed description. Find a smoker and hypnotize her. Ask her if she'd be willing to let you take her off the cigarettes for one hour. If she says "Yes.", say to her, "For the next hour, whenever you take a drag from a cigarette, it will taste like burning rubber. It will be the most awful cigarette you have ever tasted in your life. It will be disgusting. And each drag you take will taste worse than the one before..... If you understand this, nod your head." When she nods her head, the suggestion is locked in. This suggestion often produces amnesia in the conscious mind. She will light up a cigarette and suddenly grimace and be very surprised that the cigarette tastes so awful. This is a very reliable demonstration, so try it out!

Prepare to Catch!

When doing a stand-up induction, always remember to tell your subject that her legs will remain firm beneath her no matter how quickly and deeply she relaxes as she goes into hypnosis. You might add that "Just as some animals can stand and sleep, human beings can also stand and sleep." For some subbjects, the hypnosis comes on so profoundly that they may collapse and crumple to the floor. Always be ready to catch your subject and guide her gently to the floor. Let's keep street hypnosis fun and safe!

Spotlight On

Name: Win Eiam-ong
Operational area: Bangkok Thailand
In the world of hypnosis, Win Eiam-ong is unique. His "Hypno-Sculpture" technique is simply amazing! Here is the way Win describes it on his website, maya-jid.com

"Hypno-sculpture is achieved through a hypnosis technique called Rapid induction. This is where the hypnotist quickly overloads the person's mind with information and confuses them into a trance. Do not attempt this unless you are experienced AND have good intentions. There are no stooges or actors used in any of these performances.... They are too expensive! "

Hypno-sculpture is incredible to watch. While a cameraman videotapes from a distance, Win approaches a stranger on the street and instantly hypnotizes him or her. He then poses the subject, sometimes as a statue, sometimes as a movie character or sometimes as some other type of character. He then departs, leaving the subject in the posed position. The subject remains in the pose for up to half a minute. The subject then comes out of trance and looks around for the young man who "was just here a moment ago."
My favorite induction: "There was a stage hypnotist who with his fist bangs really hard on the person's teeth and shouts sleep then puts his hand to their head again... if the person does not go to sleep he does it even harder. I forgot his name. It's like if you dont go down I'll go even harder. I think its awsome.
BTW, Win later sent a note to make sure I understood that this was just a joke!
What advice would you give an aspiring street hypnotist?: read the book "Win the crowd" by steve cohen...don't walk to the book shop run to it! And for people who live in a big city- it very highly unlikely that you are going to run into anyone twice. so if you want to try any thing just go for it. You're not really going to run in to them again. Oh and have fun with what ever it is that you do.
