Can You Do an Instant Induction on Yourself?

Can You Do an Instant Induction on Yourself?

What a Silly Question....
Occasionally I get a question from someone who views my Youtube videos. They want to know if you can do an instant induction on yourself. I tell them, "No. This is something that you can only do to someone else."

Well, because of what happened last weekend, I will have to change my answer. My friend Kenda Summers and I were doing a show in Cedar Rapids Iowa. We wanted to test out a new routine for our show in Chicago this month at the Mid-America Hypnosis Conference.

We are SO excited about this show!

Anyway.... We had something happen in our show that has never happened before. In fact I have NEVER heard of it happening EVER!!!

Here's what happened....
The show was progressing nicely and we had two STAR subjects. We did the game show skit. One volunteer is only able to give wrong answers and the other volunteer is the smartest woman in the world and knows all the answers. If the judges overrule her (and they always will) she is instructed to become highly agitated.

The final question was, "How long does an instant hypnotic induction take?"  She looked at me and said with an intellectually superior attitude, "How about... an instant?"

"Wrong!" I said.

"WHAAAAT!???" she screamed.  "No." I said. "The answer is three nanoseconds."

She exploded in indignation. "What are you talking about!!! Everybody knows that an instant induction takes an instant. What is the matter with you?!!! You just go SLEEP!"and she clapped her hands. Her head snapped back and she was silent.

Cory was at the show and he described it this way. "Kenda looked astonished, and Sean looked like a dog who had just heard a high-pitched noise."

I couldn't believe what I had just seen. I shook her shoulder... Nothing! She was OUT!

She had done an instant shock induction on herself!!! Some audience members were filming and I am trying to find video for you. It was amazing!

How to Deal With Noises and Distractions in Hypnosis

Ask Sean

Q. How do you deal with sounds and other disturbances when you are hypnotizing a person? Won't these disturbances cause the subject to emerge from hypnosis?

A. Great question! First of all, I have wonderful news for you. Trance is not particularly fragile.

Often new hypnotists feel as though if they stop talking for just a couple of seconds, their subject will pop out of trance. While it is true that if you leave your subject on her own for an extended time, she will emerge herself from hypnosis, you don't have to worry about this happening very quickly.

Now, about distractions. You can keep your subjects from being distracted and popping out of trance by using what I call the "Distraction Filter."

Here is an explanation from a recent course I taught in Las Vegas.

If you'd like to learn more about how to hypnotize someone and how to keep them in trance, you can learn these things and much more with this product.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Last year we did street hypnosis in Las Vegas and had a blast! Maybe it's because the people there are out to have a good time and were more willing to participate than people in other parts of the country. Maybe it was just that my students were a bunch of "hypno-animals", hypnotizing any man woman or child that would stand still for them. It WAS a wild bunch of hypnotists.

We were cleaning up the classroom at the end of the first day and a wedding party showed up to inspect the ballroom. I dropped the groom and one of my students dropped the maid of honor... (with permission, of course!)

Anyway, next weekend we'll be at it again because I'm doing another class in Las Vegas called "Hyp on the Strip!" Why don't you come out and join us?

Street Hypnosis - Ask Sean

Q. I know you are an expert on Dave Elman's work, and I have seen you teach the Dave Elman Induction. Did Dave Elman have a special way to emerge his subjects from hypnosis?
A. This is a great question! Dave's emergence was simple, yet elegant. It almost never results in a hypnotic hangover. Here is what Dave would say.

"In a moment I am going to have you open your eyes and when you do, you will feel better than you have all day.... Now open your eyes and see how good you feel!"

That's it! He gives a post hypnotic suggestion that the person will feel good after emergence and then he emerges the subject.

Many hypnotists will take a long time to do the emergence (I do this too sometimes) but it really isn't necessary. So, now you know! Street hypnosis is quick hypnosis, so why not make your emergence quick too?!
I will post more details on this in my next offering.

How Do You Find a GOOD Hypnosis Teacher?

Eight Questions to Ask Your Prospective Hypnosis Instructor

If you have decided to become a Clinical Hypnotherapist or Consulting Hypnotist, you can expect to spend at least $1700.00 for a course that lasts at least seven days. This is a considerable investment in time and money, so how do you tell if the instructor is a good one? I recommend that you interview several instructors and ask the following questions.

1. What is the quality of the hypnosis organization the instructor represents?

· Your course should certify you with a reputable hypnosis organization that provides opportunities for continuing education as well as support to help you build a practice. If your instructor represents a reputable organization such as the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association (IMDHA), or the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (ACHE), you can be assured that you will receive the support you need and that you are certifying with a respectable organization.

2. Who did the instructor study with?

· Many hypnosis instructors have received inadequate hypnosis education. They studied with one obscure instructor, who probably studied with another obscure instructor, etc. This means that the hypnosis education they can provide you is just watered-down mediocrity. Ask the instructor who he/she studied with and then look up THOSE people. Are they world-renowned? Are they considered the best of the best? A truly good hypnosis instructor strives to learn from giants in the field, and then continues his/her education by taking classes and reading books and journals just to keep up to date.

3. Is the instructor a full time hypnotist?

· Sad to say, most hypnosis instructors are part-timers. The downside to this is that they never get enough clients to become really proficient. A good instructor has treated thousands of clients.

4. What hypnosis books does the instructor recommend?

· This seems like a no-brainer because one would expect a professional hypnosis instructor to be very well read. Most aren’t. This will tell you two things. First, you will find out if your prospective instructor is well read. Second, you will get some insight into the type of hypnosis your instructor practices. If he/she recommends Elman, Erickson and Yapko, you can be assured that this instructor knows clinical hypnosis. If the recommendations are for Weiss, Bernstein, and books like “The Secret,” you can expect a heavy metaphysical bent to the course.

5. Is the instructor an expert with Instant and Rapid Inductions?

· A good hypnotist should be a master of all types of inductions. Different inductions work for different people. Unfortunately, most hypnotists only know one induction, the slow progressive muscle relaxation induction, otherwise known as PR or PMR. There are MANY inductions out there, such as the Dave Elman Induction, instant inductions, and confusion inductions. If your prospective teaches instant and rapid inductions, you can be pretty sure that this person knows all the others too.

6. Is the instructor internationally known?

· Once again, a no-brainer. Do a google search on this individual and see what others are saying about him/her.

7. Does the instructor have testimonials?

· If your prospective instructor is good, there should be testimonials available from satisfied students. Video testimonials are even better because you can really see what the students think about their training.

8. Can the instructor talk to all aspects of hypnosis - clinical, street, stage?

· Most instructors know only one type of hypnosis. The techniques of stage hypnosis and street hypnosis are essential to the clinical hypnotist who wants to market the hypnosis practice. Street hypnosis is considered the most difficult form of hypnosis and enables the hypnotist to gain the best skills and confidence. A really superior hypnosis instructor knows how to do all three types.

I hope these tips will help you find the hypnosis education you deserve. Feel free to email me if you have further questions!

Ask Sean

Q. I want to order one of your DVD's, but please don't put "hypnosis" on the mailing box.

A. We NEVER do!
I've only gotten this concern a few times, but as one experienced business man told me last week, "If you hear something once, it may represent the thoughts of hundreds of customers who just haven't voiced it."

So here's the deal. When you order a DVD or book from me, it comes in one of these neat, boxes with your address and my address AND NOTHING ELSE! :-)

Good question!

Here's what it looks like:

Spotters are Useful
We were doing street hypnosis on the boardwalk. In the video you will see a girl answer a payphone and then drop into trance. One of my crew, Ian, decided that she might fall the wrong way and used his ninja reflexes (He really is a ninja and teaches Ninjutusu at a Martial Arts Dojo) to catch her. Here is the video. You need to be careful when you do street hypnosis and I post this video to illustrate the point.

These inductions are not just for stage hypnosis. By using instant/rapid inductions in a clinical practice, the hypnotist has much more time to do the therapy. This is a win for the hypnotist and a win for the client.

Most hypnosis schools do not teach instant and rapid inductions. Why is this? It's because few instructors know how to do these inductions. We do, and we can teach you to do them too!

Finger Magnets Wording

Finger Magnets is a hypnotic suggestibility test. Here is the way I present it. "Let's do an imagination exercise or game. Put your hands out in front of you like this and interlock the fingers. Squeeze them very tightly together. Now put your index fingers about half an inch apart and stare at the space between the finger tips. Now I want you to imagine that in those fingertips are powerful magnets and they are drawn together. Watch that space as they start moving closer together... and they want to touch. They are moving closer, and closer and closer...."

Almost Time to Play in Tampa!

Just two more days and I will be off to Tampa to teach instant and rapid inductions. This will be my last class for 2009. I haven't scheduled my 2010 classes yet, but will do so in about a month.

Here is a video of the street hypnosis outing in Las Vegas two weeks ago. The file is password protected and the password is "fashionmall"

I am working on a new book entitled "The Street Hypnotist's Bible" and I plan to publish it in a couple of months. The book will cover basic hypnosis, skits for the street and of course safety.

Hyp on the Strip

Last week I taught a two-day street hypnosis class in Las Vegas. Geoffrey Ronning who probably trains more stage hypnotists than anyone in the world, invited me to come out. What a wonderful class! The people were terrific and on the second afternoon we went down to the Las Vegas Strip and did hypnosis with strangers. What a blast!!! I can't wait to do it again.

Now I just have one more class in 2009 and that is in Tampa, 17-18 October. Then I'm going to take it easy for a few months. I will do a couple of mentorships, but no classes until 2010. Take Care!

Street Hypnosis in NYC

I am writing from the Acela train on my way back to Maryland. Had a BLAST teaching instant and rapid hypnosis in NYC and then doing street hypnosis in Union Square Park. Special thanks to Phil, Brian, Brian, Elliott and Ilya. You made this trip a LOT of fun for me and I have already decided to come back soon.

The weather was fantastic and we introduced a lot of people to hypnosis. What a great time!!!

On My Way to NYC

I am teaching this weekend in New York City so I am writing this entry from the train. Currently we are passing Wilmington, DE. The plan is to teach instant and rapid inductions and then go out into the wild and hypnotize strangers Sunday afternoon. I'm hoping to catch a comedy hypnosis show or two while I'm in the big apple.

The Global Hypnosis Summit is this weekend and I had hoped to do both of my presentations live, but since I'm teaching, I had to submit videos. My topics at the Global Hypnosis ESummit are "The Dave Elman Induction" and "Deepening the Trance."

Last night I watched Matt Davis perform his comedy hypnosis show. It was a tough crowd, but Matt did really great!

Street Hypnosis Report - 13 September 2009

Yesterday was a beautiful day in Annapolis! We arrived around 3:30 at our usual spot by the docks. I had just finished a two-day mentorship with a gentleman from Mexico City and I wanted to give him the chance to do instant inductions "in the wild." He did great!

A group of people approched us as soon as we finished setting up our sign, but they were hesitant to participate. I started them out with the "finger magnets" test. As often happens, each of them wanted to try hypnosis, but nobody wanted to go first so I suggested that they all try it at the same time.

I did a quick Elman group induction and then gave them suggestions for good health and attitude. One young man went very deep so I suggested that he try an instant induction. He dropped like a rock and so I emerged him and handed him off to my mentorship friend and he did an arm pull induction and once again, the young man dropped like a rock. With this little boost of confidence my friend had no trouble hypnotizing at least half a dozen more people before we finished for the day.

Ian worked the camera for me and got some really good footage for youtube.

Ask Sean About Street Hypnosis 9 Sept. 2009

Q: Do you ever do impromptu therapy with the people you hypnotize?

A: Usually no. First of all I believe that we should only do therapy with people when they request it. For instance, If your subject is a smoker, it would not be a good idea to give her an aversion to cigarettes, unless she gave you permission. Also, you should never work with pain or any other medical condition without a referral from a physician. If you subject has back pain and you suggest away the pain, he could walk away and injure himself since the pain is not there to remind him that he is injured.

So, bottom line... Don't do therapy during street hypnosis. Street hypnosis is for education and entertainment only.

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Ask Sean

Q: I notice that a lot of hypnotists use a monotone voice when giving suggestions to a subject. Should I do that?

A: Absolutely not! When you are giving suggestions to your subject you can be as animated as you like! In fact, be VERY animated.

Your emotion will help the suggestions take hold even better! Also, it helps to repeat the suggestions. They take hold even better when compounded.

Many hypnotists have used the boring monotone, possibly beause they heard it used by other hypnotists in the movies and on television. Some of these men were great hypnotists, but it was not BECAUSE of the droning monotone. It was IN SPITE of it. Put some emotion into your suggestions. Remember that you are speaking to the subconscious mind, the FEELING mind. Have FUN!

Wording for Arm Stiff and Rigid During Street Hypnosis

Reader Question:
When you are out doing street hypnosis, what is the wording you use when you make the subject's arm so stiff that it will not bend?
Sean's Answer
First of all, the "arm stiff and rigid" challenge is best done after the "eye lock" challenge described in the last issue of this newsletter. It is important to become more insistent and authoritative as you go through the challenge. Here is what I say after an instant induction and the eye lock test. "In a moment I am going to pick up this arm [touch] by the wrist. When I do, I want you to make a tight fist and stiffen up that arm. Make it stiff and rigid as an iron bar! [pick up wrist] That's right, stiff and rigid. Lock that elbow! As I count from one to three, make it stiff and rigid as an iron bar! One, lock that shoulder [touch shoulder], your arm is stiff and rigid as an iron bar! Two [touch elbow], locking at the elbow, your arm is becoming stiff and rigid and three [touch wrist], locking at the wrist. Your arm is stiff and rigid as an iron bar. So rigid, in fact that if you were to TRY to bend that arm, the harder you try to bend it, the more stiff and rigid it becomes! TRY to bend it, it becomes STIFFER. Try HARDER, it gets STIFFER. Try HARDER, it gets STIFFER!!! ... In a moment I'm going to tap your hand and when I do, the arm flops down and you go much deeper. [tap] Go much deeper."

Reader Question:
What is the wording you use when you are out doing street hypnosis and want to make the subject's hand stick to the bench?
Sean's Answer
Here is what I say. "In a moment I am going to take this hand and place it on the park bench. I will count to three and as I do, feel your hand sticking tightly to the bench. One, feel that hand sticking tightly to the bench as if it were super glued down there. Two, that hand is welded to the bench, fused to the bench! And three, it's as if that hand and the bench were carved from one single block of wood, one single piece. In fact, if you were to try to lift that hand it would stick even harder. The harder you try to lift it the more it sticks. Try to lift it, it sticks tighter. Try harder, it sticks tighter. Try harder, it sticks tighter."

Ask Sean

Reader Question:
What wording do you use when you lock a subject's eyes shut?
Sean's Answer
As you know, this is a test for a fairly light state of hypnosis. Namely, this is catalepsy of a small group of muscles, or a ONE on the Arons scale. To accomplish this I say, "In a moment I'm going to count from three down to one as I tap you on the forehead. As I do, feel those eyelids locking down, sealing tightly shut. [touch] One, feel those eyelids closing down, sealing tightly shut, as if they were superglued down. Two, it's as if those eyelids were welded together, and three, it's as if those eyelids were fused together in fact, if you were to try to open them, they would seal even tighter. In fact, the harder you try to open them, the more tightly they seal shut. Try to open them they seal tighter. Try harder, they seal tighter. Try harder, they seal tighter..... Now stop trying, relax them and go much deeper." That's it!

Hypnotized by Mail?
My latest video is different from any I have posted so far. Many people have been asking me to show some more
unusual inductions.

The late Ormond McGill, Dean of American Hypnotists, wrote about an unusual induction in his book, "The Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism". He describes how a person may be hypnotized long distance, by mail!!!

I had never seen a video of this, so the logistics were a little tricky, but I think it turned out pretty well.

In this VIDEO, I actually hypnotize a young woman by mail. Imagine this. You could be thousands of miles away and yet still be able to drop someone into trance. What a concept!

I added in some spooky music to add to the suspense. Actually, it is a pretty spooky concept, don't you think?
Global Hypnosis eSummit 13-15 March 2009

Mark Your Calendar! As Scott Sandland, organizer of the Global Hypnosis eSummit, observes, "Most hypnotists have never been to a national conference. As valuable as the education is and no matter how great the speakers are, there are just too many problems with them for you to take the time, expense, and hassle to go, but no more!

"We have scoured the globe looking for top trainers in every country. There should be no boundaries and no obstacles to learning. Watch as techniques are demonstrated just like you were sitting in the audience. Learn new ideas and techniques to expand your practice. See what's being done in other parts of the world that can impact your practice wherever you live. Learn new ways of doing things. Lectures will be for sale on an individual basis after the two week period has expired."

I will be presenting two lectures - one on the Dave Elman Induction and one on Street Hypnosis.

Reader Question:
What is the wording you use when you make the subject's arm so stiff that it will not bend?
Sean's Answer
First of all, the "arm stiff and rigid" challenge is best done after the "eye lock" challenge described in the last issue of this newsletter. It is important to become more insistent and authoritative as you go through the challenge. Here is what I say.

Video of the Month

The "Tug" induction
This induction was inspired by a video I saw from hypnotist David Fontenot. It is actually a quite gentle instant induction, but can look a little "energetic" depending on the size of the subject and how close together her feet are when the induction is triggered.

The "tug" should be quick, but not forceful. Imagine the tug as an electric shock, rather than a "pull".

One more thing to notice in the video. Subject number two reacts to the shock by quickly raising her hands. This is a normal reaction to the shock. An inexperienced hypnotist might be tempted to think the induction has gone wrong. Watch how I continue deepening and she drifts down into hypnosis.
A Video Milestone - 1.5 Million Views!
Almost two years ago I began posting my work on Youtube. One of my first videos was an "arm pull" induction with a young woman named J********. She is the daughter of a friend of my sister and a very sweet girl. Maybe it was because she is so photogenic or maybe because she dropped so quickly and so deeply into trance, but her video has been wildly popular. So far it has received over half a million views, making it one of the most popular hypnosis videos on Youtube! On Wednesday, total video views for all my videos topped 1.5 Milllion!!! Thank you very much for watching the videos and for supporting this street hypnosis newsletter.

My goal is to educate people about hypnosis and street hypnosis in particular and how to do it safely. Please drop me a line with any suggestions you might have!

If there is enough interest, I will try to get her back for a demo. No guarantees, but I will do my best.
