Reader Question:
I've always read that "All hypnosis is self-hypnosis." Do you agree?
Sean's Answer:
Not really. In his book Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism Ormond McGill talked about the Western view of hypnosis and how it differs from the Eastern view. In the West, we tend to value our "self determination" greatly and it is more comfortable for us to think about hypnosis as something we do ourselves. In the East, hypnosis is thought of as something that the hypnotist does to his subject. When it comes to instant inductions, my view tends to be more Eastern because I believe it is important for the subject to follow instructions instantly, without questioning. This makes for quicker, deeper inductions which is, of course, why we do instant inductions.

Chips off the Old Block

My twin sons Sean and Ian have recently certified with the National Guild of Hypnotists, the largest hypnosis organization in the world. Sean has just performed his first hypnosis show at his college in Vermont, and since Ian is attending school close to home, he still comes out with me on street hypnosis outings. I don't have any film from Sean's show, but here's a clip of Ian in action. I'm very proud of them both!

A Double Speed Induction

The Maryland Extreme Street Hypnosis Team was doing street hypnosis in Annapolis, MD last week and two of our team, Brian and Ian, decided to try something different. "Why not try a double instant induction?" They found a couple of willing subjects and here is the result of their effort. I think it turned out pretty nicely! Here's a video of the induction.

Reader Question:
I have noticed you staring into the eyes of your subject just before you trigger the induction. Are you doing something with your eyes to make them go into trance?
Sean's Answer:
Good question! I am giving the subject my best "hypnotic stare." I stare into her eyes without blinking to intimidate her. It usually doesn't take long before her eyes glaze over, or she gives me a look of resignation. That is the ideal time to trigger the induction. Those of you who have trained with me know that intimidation is not something I do naturally. This is just an act, but it works very well.

Why the "Hand Drop" Induction Should Be Done Seated
We have a really cool video example this issue. The hand drop induction should always be done seated because when the induction is triggered, there is a natural tendency for the subject to lurch forward from the waist in a jack-knife motion. This is very difficult to control from a standing position and the subject could launch herself headlong onto the floor. Bad, Bad, Bad!!! Always perform this induction with the subject seated. Here's an example of the motion I described.

Reader Question:
I was working with a subject and told her that her hand would be stuck to the arm of the chair, but she didn't stick, and picked up her hand. Any ideas?
Sean's Answer:
There could be many reasons why she didn't stick, but the two most obvious reasons are she either was not deep enough, or maybe it was your wording. Let's talk about the wording this issue. Here is what I say, "In a moment I will count from one to three. As I do, feel this hand (touch) sticking to the arm of the chair. One, feel that hand sticking to the arm of the chair as if it were super-glued down. Two, it's as if that hand was fused to the chair. And three, it's as if that hand and the arm of the chair were carved from a single block of wood... one single piece. In fact, if you were to TRY to lift that hand, it would stick even tighter. The harder you TRY to lift that hand, the more tightly it sticks. Try to lift it, it sticks tighter. Try harder, it sticks tighter. Try even harder to lift that hand, it sticks tighter!!!" Be insistent. Use a commanding tone. She won't lift her hand.

Report - National Guild of Hypnotists Convention

8-10 August - Marlborough, MA
I'm back from the convention and here is my report:
The convention this year was packed with exciting speakers and lots of information. Most of the seminars I attended were about marketing and various therapy techniques, but of course I had to attend a couple of offerings on instant and rapid inductions just to see if anyone was doing something new! I once read an account of how the Abbe Jose-Custodio de Faria (1756-1819) used to hypnotize people. In many respects, the Abbe Faria may be considered the first speed hypnotist. Here is an account from Alexander Bertrand of an instant induction performed in 1802. "He placed the person who wished to be influenced in an armchair, and urged him to close his eyes and meditate; then, suddenly, he uttered in a strong and commanding voice the word 'Sleep,' which usually made a keen enough impression on the patient to produce in him a slight jolt of the whole body, warmth, perspiration, and sometimes somnambulism." Harvey Hunt, one of the presenters, demonstrated the Abbe Faria induction during his program. It was very interesting to watch. Harvey did the induction standing, and began with a good "hypnotic stare", but I think the Abbe Faria would have been proud! Well done, Harvey!
Fun Things to do While They're in Trance

Mind Reading
I want to thank Brian Phillips for this one. Deepen your subject and ask her for some benign personal information like her birthday or the name of her first pet. Then tell her that she will forget having told you this information. Ask her to open her eyes and say something like, "Many people believe that because, as a hypnotist, I can read people so well... they believe that I can read minds. You don't believe in that sort of thing, do you?" Then go through a process whereby you "guess" her birthday. "I feel that it's in the spring, is that right?... and I think it's an even number...." When you "guess" the right date, your subject is amazed and the crowd loves it!

Reader Question:
In your recent video where you hypnotized the young woman and anesthetized her so that she wouldn't experience pain when she had her ears pierced, you did a "hand drop" induction on her. Had she been "pre-hypnotized"?

Sean's Answer:
Good question. She did drop like a rock, but no, she was not pre-hypnotized. She arrived about ten minutes into my lecture so she was not "softened up". The demonstration went very well and she felt no discomfort during the procedure.

An Interesting Handshake Induction

Tricky
Michael Bennett of Bennett/Stellar University posted an instant handshake induction which you may find very interesting. The "victim" is Keith Livingston, whom I interviewed back in the spring. Have a look at Michael's technique and see if you can figure out all the nuances. This is a very cool induction. BTW, Keith Livingston and I will be teaching an instant induction course in Seattle, Washington 13-14 September. Come join us and learn how to do these inductions yourself!
Street Hypnosis - Practical Applications

What Good is This?
Street hypnosis is fun, sure, but why should a serious clinical hypnotist be interested in it? Although inductions such as the hand drop and the arm pull seem rather flashy, there are serious, clinical situations that call for the use of these inductions. Sometimes a client will be a little nervous and have trouble concentrating. Other clients may be very analytical. Both types of clients can have trouble going into hypnosis. The bottom line for a hypnotist or hypnotherapist is that if you can't put the person into trance, you can't help him or her. A hypnotist who is comfortable doing these rapid inductions should be able to hypnotize almost anyone who comes into the office. As hypnotists, we get better at our craft the more we practice it, and street hypnosis allows a hypnotist to get a LOT of practice. You will learn things out on the street that you just won't learn in a clinical setting. On the street there are distractions galore and you get to work with a wide variety of people. Personally, I refined my testing procedures on the street. Years ago, I used to have clients occasionally fail my depth testing. Using what I learned doing street hypnosis, I cannot remember the last time a client failed a test for depth. I am constantly refining my techniques, using what I learn on the street. Go on out and give it a go!

National Guild of Hypnotists Convention

8-10 August - Marlborough, MA
I'm off to Massachusetts for the annual NGH convention. I attend this convention and educational conference every year and I always learn a lot! They offer over 200 different seminars on every hypnosis topic imaginable and as the leadership says, "It's Intense!" If you see me in the hall between seminars, please stop me and say "Hello." I plan on spending the evenings in the bar at the Embassy Suites, having fun with instant inductions. You are welcome to join me. In past years the hotel management has been happy to let us play in the lounge and we have hypnotized several bartenders and waiters... as well as other customers.
